How do I get to Ely, NV?

No I don't mean directions but rather one way transportation. I have a limited amount of time and will be meeting up with a friend who is westbound and want to join him to ride the final portion of his journey to Sacramento. I will be coming from the Sacramento area. Thanks in advance for your help and ideas.

there used to be semi regular bus service on Highway 50. Reno to Salt Lake. I forget the name of the carrier. 3 days a week maybe.

I'm not sure the bus service exists anymore, I talked to a cyclist that rode into Ely in 2005 and decided to abandon his tour. According to him there wasn't bus service out of Ely, he had to hitch a ride to Wendover (about 120 miles north) and caught the dog there.

Greyhound does not go there. But; you could take the bus to Wells or Wendover (my choice) on I-80. Allow two days for the ride.

Amtrak with your bike to Reno, then meet him in Austin (about halfway between Reno and Ely).

Thanks for the replies. The amtrak option looks like the best bet. My friend is a bit ahead of schedule and meeting in Austin looks like it will work.

As a follow up I was unable to find any regular bus service other than along I-80. Also no rental car companies with locations east of Fallon. I guess they don't call it the loneliest road in americe for no reason.

I was stuck in Ely last year.
There is limited air transportation from either North Vegas or Elko.
Like five days a week.
You can fly into Vegas on Southwest- take the shuttle to North Vegas Airport - then into Ely.

jamawani, I did look into that but airfare with extra baggage charges will break the budget.

Thanks for your reply and also I have to credit you indirectly for me finding this forum. You were mentioned in another forum that you could be found on here and were knowledgeable (if not an expert) on routes in the Western US. A few days later and a lot of reading and I'm glad I found this resource as it will make my trip much more enjoyable.

If you really want to meet in Ely -
Then take Amtrak of Greyhound to Elko -
(No, not Amtrak - no baggage in Elko - only Greyhound, bleah)
Have your friend rent a car in Ely -
Then have him pick you up in Elko and drive back.
I really don't think there are any one-way rentals.
Your friend may be against getting in a car, though.
Then again - having you along for the last week and a half -
May be more important.

You do know that US 50 from Ely to Fallon is hot, dry, steep, and empty - eh?

Have fun - J

Heading west out of Austin, check out the teeny tiny state highway running just south of and parallel to US 50 for about a day's ride. It's a beautiful day's ride through extra remote territory and a lovely box canyon. Sorry I don't have the highway number in front of me -- you'll see what I mean on the map, though.
