new hampshire roads
so i'm probably going to a wedding next spring in new hampshire. i'll be flying into manchester and the thought of renting a car does not sound so appealing. i am contemplating bringing the bike and pedaling west. the twon is roughly 70 miles west-ish. i've looked on google earth to get an idea of a route. it seems that route 101 would be the easiest way to get there. any locals know if this is a good (acceptable hills, smooth surface, scenic, etc.) and safe (traffic volume, shoulder, services, etc.) road to bike on? as i said, it is a roughly 70 mile ride, and i won't be carrying very much, so i should be able to do it in one day. any advice is welcome. thanks.

Hey Ernok,
I live in southern NH - a good resource to check is the NH Dept of Transit website for bikers. They publish maps that offer suggested bike routes,
https://www.nh.gov/dot/nhbikeped/maps.htm
The terrain here in Southern NH is hilly, but very scenic. If you ride regularly and are used to riding on moderate hills, doing 70 miles in one day should not be a problem.
Route 101 is listed as a suggested route, but be careful, the traffic on 101 can be heavy and very fast. I avoid 101 by riding on parallel roads. Near where I live 101 is busy. The shoulder seems to be OK along some stretches, but the traffic is moves fast (highway speeds). Route 101 is one of the main East-West roads and it is a VERY busy road at certain times of the day. Lots of impatient and tired motorists on this road.
Near Manchester you'll probably want to avoid 101. The DOT maps list alternate roads that you can use instead of 101 when you are near the "Queen City."
I think the ride out west from Manchester is a little hilly, but not too bad.
NH is a really beautiful state. Good luck!

I'd be better able to help you if I knew toward what town you intend to ride. Getting out of Manchester is difficult to say the least..especially from the airport. Let me know and I could help.

update:
thought i would ressurect this thread now that i have more information to provide.
in early july, i'll be trying to get from manchester airport over to marlborough. looks like its around 60 miles or so. any nice routes to follow? must be in marlboro in the evening the day of travel. earliest flight into nh lands at around 10am. think thats enough time, after some minor-ish bicycle reassembly, to make the trip? or land late the night before (11-ish p.m.) and figure something out?
