Funny thing happened on the way to Long Beach.

The funniest thing anyone ever said to me about the bike was on the way to Long Beach, California from Jacksonhell, Florida in June of 1992.

Coming into East New Orleans on US 90 coming out of Mississippi ( love typing that word) Talitha and I came upon one of those roadside restaurants they have down there, out in the middle of nowhere in "Zone 9", called "Cap'n Jacks Crawfish Shack."

Being hungry and thirsty we pulled off the shoulder of the road and walked our bikes across the gravel parking lot. It was hot and dusty out there and we were looking forward to a cold Bud. We leaned our touring machines up against the front window and walked inside.

There were a half dozen people sitting at a short bar and a couple fellas playin' pool over to the left of the room. Two four-tops and that was the bar. Guy behind the nice mahogany topped bar had on a Captain's cap that said "Jack" on the bill of the cap below the piping on the front.

Well, he looked us up and down, looked out the window at the bikes, looked back at us, back out the window, back to me and said: "Where y'all comin' from?"
I replied: "Jacksonville, Florida."
Jack: "Whoo-eeee...... (pause) Where y'all headed?"
Me: "Long Beach, California."
There was a brief, contemplative silence in the room as everyone in the bar digested the information, they all looked out the window at the bikes then, back at Talitha and me and Jack says in a hoarse whisper, "S*** son, you coulda flew!"

We had us a real good meal and conversation at Cap'n Jack's Crawfish Shack. Lot's of cold beer too. Wound up in the tent behind the place for the night.
