Any recommendations other than Rt 7 to get from GB to Lanesborough. I'm trying to organize a nice day trip to the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail and a side trip to climb Mt. Greylock for those of us inclined () to do so. If the folks in Mass have finished Phase 2 from Chester to Adams, those that do not do the climb, can go all the way to Adams and mingle why the climbers can go up and over Greylock and meet in Adams for the trip back south. But I'm trying to see if there is a better way than simply rt 7. I have a free Berkshires map I got from the southern Berkshire Tourism office, but it lacks some details like the best way to cross I-90, etc.

Do yourself a favor, when you get into the CT-MA area buy a RUBEL "Western Mass" bike map. Should be available in Salisbury CT, at "The Village Store" bike shop, 19 Main St, (Rtes 41 & 44) 860-435-9459, or in Great Barrington at one of two bike shops. "Harlan B. Foster", 15 Bridge St, 413-528-0564, or "Berkshire Bike & Blade", 326 Stockbridge Rd, 413-528-5555.

These maps have excellent info for bicycling, shows the ups & downs for the terrain, and has recommended and secondary routes to use.

From Great Barrington to Stockbridge to Pittsfield, the map shows two alternate routes besides RT 7, and north of Pittsfield, RT 7 has a good shoulder.

After you do your ride from NJ this coming weekend, would you either post the routes you took, or send me a PM or e-mail. I'd be interested on how you went after you crossed the river into Poughkeepsie (SP-?) to Millerton to Salisbury to GB.

Thanks Johnnyk.. I will! Actually I can tell you the route from Poughkeepsie (mid Hudson brige) to Salisbury, CT already since it is the basic Adventure Cycling Route that goes from maine to Florida. I will pick up the route in New Paltz and leave the route in Salisbury. I don't have the maps in front of me now but basically the route once it crosses the Hudson goes north on Rt 9 through Hyde Park up to Rhinebeck. Then it basically cuts east on state/county roads to Millerton and Rt 44.

Did you reply to me in my last thread further down this forum? After the server was moved, we lost all my replies and I couldn't find the person who told me some good info about the Millerton area...

Yes, that was me. And if I remember correctly, you're taking RT 44 from Millerton to Salisbury, then RT 41 north to RT 23 east into Great Barrington. Beautiful riding in that area.

Yup, although I've got some deviations off Rt 41 north of Salisbury... A lady from the Berkshires Tourism dept. highlighted a way that is a little off Rt 41 and goes by a covered bridge before meeting up with Rt 41 just before downtown G.B. There is an alternate route that goes directly to Butternut but looking at my USGS maps, it looks to go over a nice sized hill for my riding partner.

P.S. Route from Poughkeepsie to Salisbury:

Rt 9 north with a little detour on Old post Rd in Staatsburg (have no idea why, since we return to Rt 9 very shortly) Once in rhinebeck, it's uS 308 east to Cty 19 south/east to US 82 north/east to US 199 east to Cty 60 to US 22 into Millerton and then it's Interstate 44 into Salisbury, CT.
