route advice: Touring/Camping in & around W. Virginia's Geo Washing Nat. Forest
I'm in need of a bit of guidance.
I'm looking to do an end of March bike trip in W. Virginia's George Washington National Forest. Sort of the north-east section of this route: Virginia Bikepacking Route - VMBT - BIKEPACKING.com
There's two of us going, one of which is a studious student, not a big fat couch potato, but not up for 50 miles a day. More like 25 or so. Since I don't have airline tickets in the budget, I might be able to get a new bike out of this, but otherwise we'll like be on: 1. Kona Jake the Snake; 2. A 26in MTB, either a Gunnar Rockhound, or my dropbar RockHopper from the '90s (touring bike now...).
As far as advice goes, if the car is parked near Warm Springs, and we want to mix dirt roads and trails with our camping, does anyone have any advice on roads to use and road to avoid? When we hop on the trail, I'd like to know where my bail out point is, in case things are too muddy / slick / hilly / whatever.
Anything else I need to know about George's Forest? I'm also open to such wisdom as - don't bike it, hike it - due to the time of year and potential weather. Last April we hiked in Ohio and had just WICKED thunderstorms blow through at night.
thanks.
