Camping along East Coast Route? (U.S.A.)
I'm thinking about riding from Bar Harbor, ME to Savannah, GA this summer. I would most likely use the Adventure Cycling Association Maps. I would like to plan on camping as much as possible. Can someone please tell me about camping along this route. Would it be possible to plan on camping most nights (stealth is possible)? I am trying to figure out how much money I would need. Any info would be great! Thanks.

You can stealth just about anywhere - just find a relatively secluded place and pitch the tent/hammock/what have you. That being said, some of the Eastern Seaboard is heavily urbanized, so you may need to circumnavigate areas like NYC, DC, etc.
Good luck! |
Donna Ikenberry's East Coast book is comprehensive and she jumps from campground to campground. I don't think you'll have a problem at all. In fact, with that book, you have no need for the AC maps.

Have you thought about warm showers? I am less than a mile from the AC's East Coast Route and am listed on the warm showers web page.

Try Salisbury State Park In MA. There are also 2 private campgrounds in the vicinity of the SP.
Stay away from the CG in Gloucester unless you want to climb hills with loaded bike. Wells SP near Sturbridge, along with private along RT.20. I Can send you my cue sheets from Portsmouth NH to Springfield MA if you wish. I am on Warmshowers and you could camp here. Also have back roads & rail trails sheets to NYC ED |
Check out Winter Island CG in Salem.

I rode from Boston Ma to Naples Fla in '04...The worst stealth camping spot I ran into was a traffic island in Brooklyn. Slept well, but I got more than a few quizzical looks the next morning while packing my gear. The lady at the Drunkin Doughnuts gave me a free coffee that morning for being so "Ballsy"!! I had no problems at all the entire trip, tho stelth camping around NYC, and DC can be a "Bit" Sketchy. Once you are south of DC you have it made in the shade!!
