Flying with a bike which case?

Cross post from the road forum. I thought you guys might fly with your bikes for touring purposes a bunch too.

Thanks for any help.

I'm going to be doing an unpaid internship with an HIV/AIDS NGO in Zambia this summer and I really wanted to take one of my bikes with me.

I was wondering what people recommended. I know there have been posts on this before, but I wanted to see how things had lasted since people last used them since the threads a little old.

The bikebag.de soft case looks pretty neat and well built, how is that? Would a hard case be better than that?

Thanks for the help choosing!

There's a long thread about this in the Road Forum:

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=399667

And probably quite a few threads here too.

BTW - I use a cardboard box ... as mentioned in the thread above.

To be fair, the title of that thread deals with shipping.

I think the best midpriced hardcase is the Serfas Bike Armor. It packs very securely and I like the strap fittings, they seem to suspend the frame and parts away from the shell pretty well.

Another idea that I think helps is buying a couple of axles and some locknuts and making yourself metal, fitted frame spacers. A pretty clever kludge that seems a bit nicer than the plastic shipping spacers.
