chainring/gear ratio help

so a week from saturday im leaving for a 2 week 1000 mile tour up the east coast. i think everything is ready to go but now im starting to worry about my gear ratio.

im doing the tour on a racing bike, a 2007 specialized allez with an ultegra double. the chainrings are 53T and 39T.

what im wondering is can i buy a smaller chainring for the inner position and move the 39T to the outer position and ditch the 53? If yes what brands are compatible with my cranks and where can i buy them?

its just that right now my lowest gear puts me at like 12 mph when im spinning at my preferred cadence. this just isnt going to work because i wont be able to shift down from there when we hit the hills or headwinds. if this is possible it seems like a good inexpensive solution that can get me through this trip. if i get into this and decide its something i want to do again i will most likely be building up a proper touring bike.

thanks for your help

38 is as low as you are going with a 130BCD crank. I would get a mountain cassette and rear derailleur.

They have an inner set of bolts with a different spacing (BCD). A double crank doesn't have them.

Sheldon (pbuh) has a page with different BCDs and what the smallest ring can go on them. Actually it is the BCD part of his glossery.
