LA to Houston in the mid summer?
I am considering adding an extension to my planned trip down the West Coast. I was just wondering how bad it would be to bike the Southwest US in the middle of summer. Is the heat bearable? Have some of you done it?

Adventure Cycling recommends you go before mid May and not until late September at the earliest. Can you not amend your plans from Seattle to Chicago? Ever see Pictures of animal bones out in the desert. You might have 100 miles without facilities. In 100 plus heat, I doubt you could carry enough water to get you up that 20 mile climb, you'd encounter in Arizona.

I did San Diego to Houston in March/April. I would not even consider it in the summer--waaayyyyy too hot, and too many long stretches without services. Not a good idea.

Brutal. It wouldn't be enjoyable even if ur fit/well stocked to do so. Only if yer trying to break some Guiness record... like that guy who wants to hike Dead Valley in the height of summer. No kidding, he says all records broken and he's not rich, so what's left? Dead Valley.
