Scottish couple touring Blue Ridge Parkway

When traveling north on Blue Ridge Parkway near Spruce Pine in my '84 VW Westfalia camper I met a couple touring the Blue Ridge Parkway on a pair of nifty Airnimal folding touring bikes equipped with Ortlieb touring panniers. They started in Washington DC 8 days before, traveled the the Skyline Drive in Virginia will proceed the entire length of BRP down to Cherokee, NC. I was overjoyed to meet them and we talked for about 20 minutes. I only wish I had taken a picture.

They commented on the very few touring cyclists they have met in the USA compared to Europe. What would you have answered?

P.S. A section of BRP between Mt. Mitchell and Craggy Gardens is closed due to a landslide making for very peaceful and quiet (NO HARLEYS!) cycling. I took my children out on a wonderful, if short, 8 mile ride. Take advantage of it if you can.
