I didn't want to steal nick's thread on the Hwy1 detour, so at risk of a somewhat duplicate thread, I'll start my own.

I leave from SFO on Sept 10. and plan to leave SBA Sept 20. Should I be concerned about the CA fires? I know it is 2.5 months away but they seem to be having problems getting things under control.

If they need any of our rain they can have it. We have plenty here in PA. I'd bet those poor people in the midwest would be happy to give up some of theirs too. Things sure are crazy.

The fires burning now will be gone by then. However, there wil be lots of fuel left and there might be other fires along the route. Fire season is usually in late summer and fall.

I just picked up my son in SF after a tour from Eureka. He said there was a lot of smole, but being along the coast, the prevailing winds blew most of it inland.

Last week Highway One was closed at Big Sur.
Check the road conditions at

Good Luck!
