Bianchi 2007 Castro Valley for touring?

Hi there,

(ooh, first post!)

I've been reading these boards every day since my partner and I decided to celebrate finishing my Master's with a tour from Vancouver to LA in September. Since I've been a student for two years, we're going the old-but-fine mountain bike refurb route to make sure we can afford both the trip and returning from the trip (i.e. we'll have to move somewhere and I guess start working? boo).

But then, someone in my town is selling a 2007 Bianchi Castro Valley 18 speed for $750 (CDN, I guess it originally cost more than the $850 US here for some unknown reason). If I can get it for $500 should I go for it? Will it be able to take touring tires and all the bips and pops associated with a tour? This would be it for me, bike wise, until I break it or get it stolen. Should I save buying a bike for when I have an actual income (I have a foggy memory of that, I remember if feels...good). Honestly, we're pretty happy to test our chops on old bikes outfitted with nice saddles, but I thought I'd check and see if I'm passing up a good opportunity.

Thanks, this place is a gold mine!
