Kansas City to Portsmouth, IA. Route?

I've been commuting by bike for about two years now. I can haul a lot of stuff. I've been on a 200k brevet, so I know I can cover miles and climbs while hauling my stuff.

Now it's time for a bike tour. My wife will be spending some time in Portsmouth, IA. I live near KC. I'm thinking of taking some time off of work, ninja camping, and making an out-and-back run on the bicycle. The trip's about 220 miles each way, and I figure if that's broken into 70 mile days I'll be just fine. I may opt for a motel room a few times along the way, too. Who knows?

This is partially to impress her ( ), partially because self-supported touring fascinates me ( ) and mostly just for kicks ( ). There are scads of towns littering the countryside of Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa. I've driven all around the midwest but mostly on highways. I understand some sections of highway shoulder are probably going to see some riding, but if anyone has a sane route (or even some sections to recommend), I'd much appreciate it. If there are any must-see attractions along the way, I'd enjoy making a journey out of those as well.

Ideas?

I think the Wabash Nature Trace may be your friend. It's a trail from the blanchard, ia at the missouri border to council bluffs. http://www.wabashtrace.org

Cross the missouri river in bellevue to iowa if you go this way. In november we'll have a bike bridge in omaha to IA.

Iowa also has a great bicycle map that can be downloaded at the Iowa DOT website. It's specifically a bicycle map with roads color coded for traffic count.
