Not about the bike, not about the training: I'm talking recon.
I want to bike from South Italy (Naples area), almost straight north thorugh Switzerland, through Southwest Germany, and finaly end in Amsterdam in roughly ten weeks. There is a ton of information out there on how to pack, on what bikes to use, and secrets to training, but very little (it seems to me) on recon work. I want to know where I can find routes, how I can work on what roads I do (and do not) want to be on. That's the hardest part for me so far. If anybody has any tips on where to go, or where to look it would be a huge help. Thanks! Oh, and don't get me wrong, it's all great info, but this is just what I'm having a hard time finding.

Ken Kifer wrote a good article on how to make inferences regarding routes from analyzing maps. Worth a read.
