Chicago to New Jersey-Best route?

I'm planning to go from Chicago to Northern New Jersey in the Spring of 2009 but not sure which way to go. I think one option is heading South to join the TransAm route and then up the Atlantic route. Another would be to follow the Northern Tier route to around Buffalo, NY and heading south-east. Which way would be nicer, with more sights along the way? Safer? I'm flexible with doing extra miles if it means having a better ride. I was also planning to stay in cheap motels the whole way. Is this possible? If anyone has any experience with these routes or have any other suggestions, I would really appreciate your input. Thank you in advance. Also, if anyone would like to join me, please let me know.

Merely a suggestion, but you might find it easier to cross Pennsylvania:
