I wear basketball shorts, they work well for me. no fancy bike clothes for me. I wear things i can find at the thrift store or free. Like my rad shaq attack gym shorts. Usually the cost of a good butt floss is much to much for me, my ass will stick to the comfort of my lovely leather brooks saddle.

I'm glad someone brought this thread up again. I posted on page 1 that I was going to ride my annual tour last Sept. without padded shorts. I had ridden with wool underwear & different quick-dry shorts all summer in prep, and saw no problems. In Sept. I made it for three days before I went out of my way to find a bike shop to buy padded shorts. Then I had my wife mail mine from home ahead of me. Stringing together longer days of riding must have made a difference. I was so uncomfortable that that was all I could think of. I am going to try it again, but I will never leave myself without the option of switching back. Either that or have my scrotum tanned.

My commutes are in jeans and cotton briefs. The usual commuter has an old saddle taken from the local rubbish dump.
My 12 centuries and touring rides in 2008 were all done on Brooks B17s with lycra running shorts (flat seams, like bike shorts but no pad/chamois) under Taslon overshorts or microfibre trousers with zip-off legs. Maybe I am a little more modest than I used to be, and I like having access to pockets a lot. I wear PI shorts when using the go-fast bike because... well, just because. The bike has a nicely and surprisingly comfortable Selle San Marco SKN Ti saddle, and admittedly I have yet to try it with unpadded shorts. And depending on mood, I'll wear padded or unpadded with overshorts on the MTB (which has a slightly less comfortable Planet-X Uranus saddle). So, from someone who used to wear padded bike shorts all the time (even at work when I was a paid bicycling advocate), I am wearing them less and less these days. Much has to do with saddle comfort. |
I don't ride over about five miles without padded shorts (actually, I usually wear padded bibs).
