Peak oil travel
A while back I thought about starting website, or maybe even writing a book, about seriously traveling anywhere without using fossil fuels for locomotion (you might still cook your food with small amounts). The idea is to have a single resource that would show travelers how to get from point A to point B, anywhere in the world, without a car, bus, train or plane.
Trouble is, something like this would have to include not just biking but also sailing, walking, cross-county skiing and maybe other things I haven't thought of. But all I know about is bike touring in California and Italy. This may not be the appropriate forum, since I'm talking about more than just bike touring. But if you have any ideas or info about non fossil-fueled travel, pm me. I'm hoping this mode of travel will catch on, like a specialized form of ecotourism. I'd love to see it become a mainstream fad. In a few decades it might be the only option we have. Maybe if there's enough interest, we could get this started. What do you think? What do you suggest? |
I suggest posting in the "Living Car Free" forum. Sounds like an interesting idea, but I'm not sure about the Peak Oil angle. If/when PO really bites, I suspect 99% of the population won't be travelling more than 50 miles from home, and most of their time will be consumed with simply trying to keep themselves fed...I hope I'm wrong, of course.
