Best rear 700C for $75 or less...

I need something for everyday riding to replace my cracked rear wheel. I plan on having a hand built wheel built soon but for the time being I need a decent wheel for as close to $75 as possible. I would like it to be black with silver side wall... 36 spoke with eyelets... . I've been looking all over the net and can't seem to find that combo. Maybe someone hear can direct me in the right direction. Nothing fancy.. if it's less than $75..... all the better.

What i'm hoping for is someone to direct me to the best rear wheel that the above amount will buy. Plan on having a very nice rear built for heavy touring in a few months. Until then this will be my commuter rear wheel.

thanks, kyakdiver

Just get a used wheel off ebay or craigslist or an lbs. Who cares what color it is as it's just temporary anyway. Or you could take the hub from your bad wheel, get a cheap rim (Sun CR-18) and straight gauge spokes and make it yourself. Not too hard.

ya i know... color isn't important and it's temporary... but.. My Jamis is still all pretty.... for now. Your right though. I have built wheels before and I suppose I can build one again. Was just hoping someone had a good source for the above mentioned wheel. Since returning from my cross country trip.. working is taking up way to much of my time:(

ask your LBS for a cheap wheel.

we've got sun cr-18 laced to shimano 2200 hubs for 69.00

also some alex/formula wheelsets will be quite affordable.

but you need to go talk to a good LBS. go talk to the guys at Greggs!

I'm picking up a rear wheel at my LBS for $50 tomorrow to replace one I tacoed last month and tried to live with before giving up on it. For that price, they will even be swapping out the gears from the old to the new wheel. All silver though... but still. I think it was right out of the catalog, less the gears.

If you get a cheap wheel, you might think about truing it after the first 50-100 miles. A while back, I bought a couple of these CR-18 wheels with a Shimano hub. Unfortunately the spokes weren't first-rate. I started to lose spokes after 6-8 months. I re-built the wheels (myself) with DT spokes and they've been OK for the last year and a half.

Lesson: the CR-18 rim and the Shimano hub are ok, but check the brand of spokes.

If your LBS cannot address your need, try aebike.com

+1. I think that's why I had to replace my wheel to begin with. When I bought the bike in August it was new as in not ridden, but it was at least 7 years old since they haven't made Nishikis for that long. The spokes, I think, relaxed over time or whatever, and I think that contributed to why my rim bent. The maneuver that caused it was not anything that I would expect would cause a bent rim, but it did.

Now that I've got my new rim, I plan on taking it in to the LBS after a week or so and getting it trued just to make sure it's all good.

ok... so if you wnet here http://www.universalcycles.com/ What would be your choice if you had $200-225 to spend. I like the idea of the Velocity Dyad's but I'm not sure where to go from there. I was thinking ultegra hubs... maybe someone has a better idea for the price range and then spokes.... I have no idea on spokes and spoke nipples. If anyone has the time to walk through the wheel build on in stock items at universal and post your build that would go a long way in helping me with this wheel build.

thanks,

kyakdiver
