4 rottweilers! Where was that!

After 100 m everything is fine.

Don't try to cycle away. A dog is about 50 km/h fast...(tested twice)

I don't get place bike behind you and walk, whilst faing the dogs, do you mean walk sideways in that case? Thanks.

I train dogs for protection work and have for the last 10 years. So, in a nutshell, I teach dogs to
bite under specific circumstances. So, if it looks like the dog has got a little more what we call "character" I'll get off the bike and chase them. Otherwise the pump works good in a hustle.

It was in Ecuador. The first bite in my tent and this additional weight forced to stop me.

Regarding the other topic:
I stop and get off the bike. Turn that my bike is behind me. Then I push the bike with side steps and proceed slowly. I was only necessary in that single case. I had to move about 20 m in that way then the dogs recognized that I leave their territory.

I support the rest of your post to 100% - But sorry the barking back doesn't work for me. I makes the dogs more aggressive and the follow you longer. I tried with twice - and prefer the stone tactic.

...by the way: I know the Greek and Turkish shepard dogs. But fortunately I had no problems with them (stop and walk away)

I thought this was going to be a thread about bringing your dog on a tour. We just got a trailer for our australian shepherd and are getting him acclimated to it for a trip next summer.

ref dog attacks

I have travelled a fair bit, Eastern block, Morrocco, Spain, France etc and have had my share of dog attacks, the worst actually being in Spain where I was stalked by two alsations...luckily a bus came around the bend out of nowhere so I was able to get away...and it was all uphill. Had dogs sniffing around tent camping wild in Morrocco...but that didnt beat the Spanish incident

I cycle with my Lab in her Burley trailer. When dogs come after us, she goes nuts with her barking. It surprises the oncoming dog(s) and it's usually quite entertaining / humorous as they try to one up one another with their barking. The sides of the trailer are bulging out all over the place as my Lab attempts to attact them, and it becomes quite a job to handle my bike for a few minutes. I've never really had what I would consider a dangerous encounter.

Bark Back

Get a dog trainer to teach you how to bark with authority. Bark the word "OUT!" Dogs hear this as an alpha command and stop in their tracks, giving you time to ride away. It has worked for me around the planet.

When you do meet that big alpha male who decides to challenge your authority, keep something hard - your bike - between you and him. When he lunges, stuff it into his mouth. When you knock their teeth loose, dogs almost always back off.

To quote the lady at the sheriff's office in Greenville, Alabama - -

"Jus' shoot 'em!"

The Deep South -
Where dogs run wild
And cyclists run for their lives.

I usually just yell "Back Off!" or something in an assertive tone and/or get a burst of speed to get away, and they usually don't chase beyond their own yard.

cheap safe effective

Its nice to talk about pepper spray or halt, but cost, availability, and grief from dog owner can be a problem. I frequently deal with aggressive dogs that need to be trained to not chase bikes.
I use a weak solution of ammonia water (usually used to wash windows) - dilute it to 25% or less - 10% works and carry it in a Vietnamese Hot Sauce bottle - the one with the narrow spout that twists to open. It will never be confused with your water bottle - is small enough to go in a jersey pocket - sprays a direct jet but in small enough quantities that you don't use your entire reserve on the first shot and the dogs recoil as soon as they get a whiff of the ammonia or feel it on their nose or eyes. It does not harm the dog but it sure gets his attention. Yes some will say that ammonia might burn the eyes but not in the dilute solution and under the circumstances the dog is not likely to get much more than a few drops unless you hold him down and dowse him with it. A couple of shots on separate days and the dogs on my regular route do not chase my bike or my ankles. The ammonia solution is available in any hardware or grocery store and should be as available internationally as in the USA. Works for me and I think I could justify my choice with the angry dog owner who happened to see me repel his dog. tom

Yelling at a strong dog with authority will only bring on more challenge. A weak dog will only work with its own territory where it feels strong.
Many dogs chase you because of varying degrees of prey drive. Herding dogs and Pit Bull types are loaded with prey generally and have more edge. A lab is also loaded with prey but generally a silly, friendly dog. Many times, although inconvenient if you just stop moving, that will kill the prey drive and the dog will then question. It does work. As far as the owner, honestly, if I would see the owner I would more likely spray him/her with ammonia than the dog. After all, its their fault.

I agree that yelling at a dog doesn't do anything really. I've seen other cyclists yell with no results. What it does do is it gets me all hyper and revved up for nothing. I just calmly blast them with my boat horn or failing that, if I have time, squirt some pepper spray (not bear spray, too harsh). The way I see it, when I'm on public property I'm totally in my rights to protect myself in whatever way I can to prevent being attacked.
