As one of my staff mentioned above, it is permissible, under the guidelines to have a link to his Amazon Store, or another website, as long as it's limited to his signature, or to a Craigs List, or Ebay page, as long as again, it's in the sig only, and does not mention price, and all transaction details are completed in PM or email. Bike forums has no affiliation with signature linked sites, either, and as long as they are within our guidelines (ie: Not fraudelent, or selling "adult" or illegal products), or a site used to attack another member of the forum, it's fine.

And I am not sure this isn't against the forum policy which states Refrain from using BikeForums to advertise your site, items for sale, commercial services or website. You may attach a short link to your site within your profile or signature.. He isn't telling us about his personal web site he is advertising a turnkey store. If this is not along the lines of solicitation or spam then I would like to see an example of what crossing the line is. Can I advertise my construction business so I can take a trip to New Zealand?

Actually, he asked for advice and help to ride across the USA. The "help to take a trip" spin began over the past day or so, as its become obvious even to hardcore Ryanistas just what is going on.

Are you denying that you are posting a link to items for sale.

The key word is LINK. I suggest you look it up.

Meanwhile a moderator and an administrator have cleared my link, along with probably hundreds of other links in hundred of other poster's signatures. How many mods and admins will it take to convince you?

OK, it is not against the guidelines according to the administrator but I still think it is a form of spam or begging; something you have accused others of.

While Historian and I haven't always seen eye to eye, I for one have to totally come to his defense on this one. It's obviously within the guidelines. I think that horse is now officially dead :crash:

For The Skeptics on His Bike Miles.
He rode His Bike from Phoenix AZ to Lafayette LA 1196 Miles.
That is Awesome for anyone, especially a New Rider.

He's not a "new rider", 10 Wheels. He's been riding since he was a kid. He did a reasonably fast century a few weeks before the tour. No need to put the myth-making machine into overdrive.

Before the century he had only rode a long ride of 20 miles.
I rode with him for 3.5 hours.
He is New to Road Riding and Touring. There was Much he lacked in Bike Knowledge.
He is an Athlete that is in Good Shape.

...
Two hours later I convinced two truckers named Ed and Jan to give me a ride down the road about 20 miles to the next big truck stop.

Simply put (I’ll spare the hitching stories for another time), after two more rides across spans that are impossible to cross on the I-10 I finally got to Baton Rouge and reunited with Josh,
He rode it all, except of course for when he didn't.

I believe his little car trip from El Centro, California, to Phoenix cut off about 300 miles from the Southern Tier route.

That's awesome!

I don't get the need to either deify or vilify Ryan. He is a fellow cyclist who has shown a lot of grit an also made a few mistakes along the way. To his credit he learns quickly from his mistakes.

My impression is that he is probably a very nice young man and I have a hard time figuring out how folks here manage to paint his comments in such a negative light.

I wish him good weather and a good ride the rest of the way.

Yes, I do think that is awesome for a new rider but here we go with the fuzzy math again. Phoenix to Layfayette is right at 1400 miles and that is with Mapquest producing probably the more direct route through Austin. Since rarely can a cyclist get that direct routing, where are the other 200 + miles? Just curious, not meant to vilfy the young man. (I felt it was my obligation to post once every 15 pages in this saga)

I got that from Google Maps 1196 miles.
So Why does everyonre have to Pick Apart each Word or Detail.
It is Just a Bike Ride.
Have Fun.
Enjoy Life.
Be Happy.

Ryan is happy...

robow 01-04-09 10:28 AM

Sorry 10 wheels, I thought that number came from his odometer. As I said, I was just curious. You shouldn't be so defensive but I do promise not to post on this thread again since it might not always contain adulation in the highest.

Actually, I think it's more of a publicity stunt than bike ride.

I'm happy, too. But I'd be even happier if complete strangers were paying for my next vacation.

Also, Ryan and crew do enough self-deification that it makes up for any lack in deification that the rest of us might make.

The ladies have NOTHING on us with their soap operas! :thumb:

I'm betting 95+% of the consistent readers of this thread (myself included) just enjoy seeing how the kid is doing and seeing how everyone who posts reacts. Like most good threads, there's truth to both "sides" that crop up here. C'mon, admit it - you're hooked! :)

Okay, I admit it!

There is more drama to this thread than the usual touring thread.

Cave 01-04-09 03:50 PM

Yeah, there should be a new subforum called "sealed section" (tarmac for short) that has links to FlyinRyan, Flic's Africa Bike thread, downtheroad.org and stealth camping. The moderator should be someone called Babysaph2984 or similar.

To join you have to own a LHT, or ask people to donate one to you.

Oh, yes indeed! this thread needs an old sci-fi/horror-style movie poster.
