IMHO Ryan is the first bike tourist to go viral and it is greatly thanks to the bikeforum. Has this ever happened to another touring cyclist? Not in my research.

Do you think Obama would be willing to push the inauguration out about 6 months or so? Because this thread is going to end in about 10 short days! Something must be done! I don't want to see it end! :)

He rode in 35* temps coming crossed Texas.

He has got to be riding with SAG support. I find it hard to believe that someone can keep up a 20 M.P.H pace loaded.

Even with the various car lifts, he's got a lot of miles under his belt in a short period of time. Plus he's a youngster! It's possible.

Hey Spin, it could be a prank like I pulled on my touring buddy one time. We had stopped for lunch and while he was away from his bike, I reset his computer to a larger wheel factor. It wasn't long after we took off again, he looked over to me and smiled and mentioned how well he was riding and how that break must have really refreshed his legs because of the excellent time we were making. I of course played along acting though as I was struggling to keep up and kept asking him to slow down a little. Well he was all grins for the rest of the afternoon. Of course you know what's coming, that evening I reset his computer again so it would run slow and the next day he couldn't figure out why he was pulling so hard to keep the same speed as the day before when he knew we weren't up against any major head winds. Well by mid morning, I had to confess to my mischief because the pace he was setting was going to kill me. Truth be told, Ryan could be getting that 20 mph, if he's got a good breeze at his back.

Actually I have maintained 24 or 25 on a level surface loaded. I had a heck of a breeze at my back, it was pretty amazing.

Not really. A few weeks into a cross country tour even an old fart (57) like me can maintain 20 mph on the flat without a headwind when riding with other riders and doing pace line. Obviously I am talking speed while riding not including breaks. There were quite a few days where we did just that on our xc tour. I have to admit that my daughter did way more than her share of the time on the front most of such days and the days where I did my share or more were infrequent.

Curious, does anyone know exactly how much of the LA to DC he actually biked? Not bashing, just wondering.

I don't think there's anything definitive that anyone can say.. Only definite was that he certainly did the Los Angeles to Phoenix hop in a car to start the trip. Admitted multiple rides in the TX to LA area. Anything else I'd just chalk up to speculation. I haven't done the mileage math nor will I bother to try.

Yes, there's no need to bother, since only cheering and cheerleading is allowed.
