LHT- How do I know when I am ready?

so how do I know when I am ready to get a LHT and give up my trek Soho. It is the only bike I have ridden so have nothing to compare it to. I rarely ride over 75 miles at one time and mostly ride 25-50 miles around my house. I know I am supposed to own one of these and would like to do some touring with 100 mile/day rides and was wondering if my soho would be up to it or if I need to get the LHT. Signed Fred.

The LHT is a nice bike, but you dont NEED to own one to tour. You can certainly do 100-mile days on your Soho, especially if you've got flat routes.

Which model Soho do you own? From what I can see on the Trek website, the Soho would make a fine touring bike. It seems to have all the necessary eyelets for racks and fenders and the 8-speed hub would keep things nice and simple. It even has lowrider mounts on the fork. I say use that.

I have the 3.0 but am wondering what I am missing. I must admit that I have never been on those long tours of several weeks riding several hundred miles/day and only go 50-100miles at a pop and the soho does ok for what I need.

+1 When you have the disposable $$ to get one. Treat it as a reward when you meet some personal goal.

Those last 7 words are the key. If your current rig does the trick do you really need to get LHT?

I'm sort of going through something similar: I really like the LHT and am tempted to buy one, but my current cyclocross bike works fine for my usage (mainly commuting, shopping, and infrequent light touring).

I know the LHT is a great bike and very tempting to get for that reason, but if you really don't need it can you justify dropping $1K for one? Personally, I can't.

babysaph, I've toured on a 22 year old Schwinn and on an old Department Store mountain bike even. It's not the bike so much as it's the rider, just so you know. I know people that have toured on fixed gear bikes even.

Here's an interesting site as well, guys that tour on Unicycles.

https://aut.unitours.org/Riders.htm

If it pedals, you can tour on it.

I'm not sure what your decision is. All I can say is that, based on what I read here, I bought an LHT. I have absolutely no regrets. I love it! It will take me on my tours long into the future. It's not a bad all-around bike either, though I'm presently building up an Allez for local rides and centuries. I've ridden two centuries on the LHT and countless weekend rides, and it's a good, comfortable, worthy ride (although a bit heavy. Maybe if I take off the racks and fenders********** )

If you took off the fenders and racks, would it not be a Short or Medium Haul Trucker?

I am pretty pysched, I have a 2009 Complete LHT. It's in the stand waiting for the last bits of putting a bike together as well as equipping it with the SKS fenders and the Surly Nice rear rack!

I have a mountain bike, a vintage sport/entry level race bike, and wanted an all around bike. That will be the LHT's purpose.

I bought the LHT and have found it to be a good bike. The main point to the LHT for me is that the bike was built to be a tour bike and not converted to a tour bike. I like that.
