How to Plan a Route?
I have been searching for awhile now. I tired map quest and did a lot of avoidance on it. Can someone help me with making a route for trip. its about 140 miles taking place from way down south jersey to north jersey. thank you

Check out your states bike routing system. In Wisconsin, I can go to our Dept of Transportation website. I will then find a link to bike routes for each county of the state. Each county has offered its best routes through the county.

Can you swing by your local AAA, our tourist place, and pick up maps?

Good maps really help. Book stores like Barnes and Noble would have them. Also available at B&n would be a NJ Atlas and Gazetteer. Good for hiking biking driving and motorcycling. Iron Butt motorcyclist equipped with the latest Street Pilot GPS still carry these maps. They are that detailed.
Riding from extreme South Jersey would probably entail a jog east towards the coast and then north thru the Pine Barrens. At some point you'll need to turn west ward. Where would depend on your destination. Lastly, the Central Jersey Bicycle Club ( www.cjbc.org ) sponsors a yearly ride called the Longest Day. It's 208 miles from Sussex to cape may. maybe their route could help in your planning. jersey's atough state to ride north to south because of the Trenton spraul. below trenton no problem and North of Trenton the canal trail system takes you to some very ridable roads above Millford. it's dealing with Trenton that can be a chore. |
Jersey has a bike map. I can't remember where I saw it but it is out there.

If you're not in the mood to buy good maps or you just want a rough idea of where you'd like to go, you can go to www.bikely.com and draw your route on a map. If you make sure to add descriptions of at least 6 points on one trip, Bikely will make a cue sheet for you as well - save your route, go back to My Bikely > My Routes > the route you want, then click Show > Cue Sheet. It's a neat little feature.

It is a bit hard to use as you have to click several times to get to the actual roads and it isn't anything like "google quality." Ray |
