How did this bike manage to have racks on it?

Look at it, the bike doesn't seem to have any holes on the frame for racks. The front fork is a normal looking suspension fork. How exactly do racks get mounted onto bikes? I thought the frames and forks usually need some sort of holes for them to attach to. No?

hahaa...nope...that's the basement of the place that I'm current renting. Here, by the beach, the humidity is so high all year round that tiles are much more long lasting against the weather.

i have an old steel rack which uses the axle instead of eyelets. it makes changing or removing your front wheel horrendous and maddening and i dont recommend it for anyone.

So I'm better off with an MTB (the one from the auction...maybe?) with eyelets? I suppose at least I'll be able to find a rear rack that will fit on it easily.

You can use P clamps, I have seen people using those with excellent results. I don't know if I would trust them with a full heavy tour load.

Tubus makes a whole line of accessories for mount racks on bikes without eyelets.

P clamps may work O.K. on a steel or alum. frame, but I difinitely wouldn't use them on a carbon fiber frame which it appears is what the OP has.

Nope...frame is "fluid formed Alloy" which I assume NOT to be Carbon Fibre. Also did you check the link to Tubus? They have many different types of adapters that will allow rack mounting utilizing the drop outs, QR's and the like.

+1 - I've been abusing my oldest set of OMM racks for over 8 years and have several OMM racks on my bikes. They are light, strong and mount easily to just about any bike. Mine have not given me the slightest bit of trouble....:love:

It's also nice to buy a product made in the US by a couple guys you can call up and chat with....:thumb:

Nice mountain bike you have there! Does your fork have a lock-out? It's nice to be able to do that.

So.... It's carbon. I think you should have a conversation with someone at Giant about the stresses bags will put on it. If they say it's good, then it looks great.

I've done very well with mine on my cross bike the past few seasons..... with the axel mount and canti brale mounts.

Using P-clips on a carbon frame won't be cheap when you are shopping for a replacement for you broken frame...:twitchy: Get the OMM racks or get a cheap steel/AL bike with some rack mounts. You can also haul a trailer with your carbon bike.

My rack mounts to the bike with P-clamps. I agree, these would be questionable for heavy loads. Not so much that they'd just let go, but they'll bend and twist around. They may remove paint from your bike, too. Not a problem for a beater, but think twice before you go clamping them on some $5,000 frame. They're not necessarily as rigid as the eyelets.

The old-style Wald baskets just mount to the axle nuts, I believe.
