novara safari panniers -- anybody use them (esp long term) ?
Hey, I read a couple markedly negative reviews about thes panniers on a bicycle review site, I'm looking trying to buy some that will really, really last.
The reviews generally said they were ripped easily, in one case on a parked bike tipping, and another time by something in the load.

I bought mine last summer, used them all summer touring, and now use them daily to carry my stuff to school. I have had no problems at all, I think they're a great design and very durable. Plus I figure if they rip I'll take them back to REI for a no questions asked return. They definitely don't rip easily.

Keep your eye on e-bay for a set. There was one auction that ended yesterday. It had been up for I think five days with no takers. It was a set for front and rear panniers with another bag thrown in. They wanted $150.00 for all five bags still having the tags on.

if your looking for a less expensive option over say the ortliebs... The Axiom waterproof series are pretty darn tough. I have ortliebs also. The Axiom typhoon and Monsoon I think are the names... one is larger and is more of a front bag/rear and the other is a rear only. Mine have been stapped to my bike for around 10K miles and still work most excellent. I will say that if you can afford them.............. Ortlieb.

I have a two sets of Novara Safari panniers (front and rear) that I bought on clearance two years ago. I'm very hard on equipment and these haven't failed me yet... and I've literally stuffed them full of gear. I did poke a very small hole in one almost right away which I immediately covered with duct tape (both sides of the hole), thinking I'd find time and a way to make a cleaner-looking patch. Haven't bothered -haven't got around to it yet. The hole hasn't spread in two years since it happened.
I'll echo the sentiment that they are strong and durable...

i've been using them for a few years now.
awesome bags.
not one single complaint.
and i use them on all sorts of bikes.
i'm a no car guy, so these bags have seen plenty of use.
I'd buy them again and again...
