World Tour on a Penny Farthing.

I thought maybe some of you might like to see some stuff by a guy who has made a pretty good effort at a world tour on a Penny Farthing.

While I was looking at his journey, I discovered a link in his site that took me to a much more fantastic achievement made by an English bicyclist called Thomas Stevens in 1885. He had moved to America in 1872 and worked as a miner among other things. He became a journalist, and has left us a well written and to the modern mind, quite amusing account of his journey on a high wheeler from San Fransisco to China and Japan , via Europe, Asia Minor, Iran, India, and Afghanistan to his ultimate goal. Stevens travelled light, seemingly only taking besides his penny farthing, a monkey wrench, a mackintosh coat which served as a tent, a bedroll, a Smith and Wesson revolver and a spare shirt and pants. The journey is all the more amazing, considering that the almost non-existent roads in many parts, including the United States at the time, left him to push his bike long distances over cart tracks, bogs, rocks and prarie.

I'm really enjoying Steven's book and you can find it here on Gutenburg in text form. I used Mobi Pocket (free) to convert the text into a more useable ebook format.
