The 44 is just too wide for me and kills my wrists. The new bars will have a much flatter top as well. Then, once I have the spare cash, I'm ripping off the cheapo trek rack and replacing it with Tubus (front and rear). Running a brooks B17, but I haven't decided if I'm going to keep that on there or replace it with a more modern "flat" road saddle. I'm not sure why people like Brooks saddles so much... saddle design (and knowledge of human anatomy and what happens when certain parts are compressed) has improved a great deal since that saddle was designed.

I didn't know that color was available in 2010 - I thought it was 2011-specific.

Sometimes folks get things right and for 100 years, or so, the B-17 has been very right for a great number of riders. Me? Because I like my bars lower than my saddle, I use the Brooks Pro on all my bikes, touring as well as sport. Fits me just fine so the saddle is out of the "How long can I spend on my bike?" equation.

May I join? 1987 Trek 520 "Cirrus", only original part remaining is the frame. Just out of a total rebuild and finally got it set up the way I wanted. From a short ride today:

My only complaint about this frame is that my legs hit (both sides) on a large water bottle in the seat tube cage. Small bottle is fine. I have another frame that has this problem, probably just the small size.

This is an '85 model 520. It was referred to as a "sport touring" model that year. The bike was in almost "showroom" condition when these photos were taken. I have since replaced the brake hoods and bar tape, and have removed the Jannd bag and mirror. It is now in "showroom" condition. That is the original Blackburn rack on. it.

During a tour through the Alps with my wife, this is us reaching the top of the Umbrail pass between Switzerland and Italy at 2,505 metres (8,200 ft):

Here, I'm on a ferry that is about to cross part of the Rhine in Holland. This was towards the end of a tour from Switzerland to Holland via the Vosges mountains of France, the hills and valleys of Luxembourg, and the Belgian Ardennes:

I've also used the bike for many things other than touring. For instance, it made a decent, though heavy bike for cyclosportifs until I bought my Madone 18 months ago. This is me with with my brother-in-law just before we did 165 km / 100 miles and 3000m / 10,000ft of climbing in the Gruyere Cycling Tour in Switzerland - he beat me by 7 minutes:

I've made many modifications to my Trek 520. I recently looked at it closely and realized that only the frame, fork, seatpost clamp, and left-hand brake lever are original parts (I've even replaced the headset recently). This highlights another great thing about the Trek 520 - it is so adaptable and customizable.
Love these pics! Showed them to my husband, who looks to be about your size. Have been "grooming" him to get a Trek 520 like mine! Thanks for posting

Since I have small children I don't have the time/money/freedom to tour as much as I'd like, but I use the 520 as my only bike right now -- commuter, club rides, charity/century rides, and now as a towing bike for my son's Novara Afterburner (trail a bike). Here's a shot of the 520 in its latest role. We're training now for the PALM ride across Michigan in June.
I've also added two photos of the 520 fully loaded, from a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in '07.
COOL picture on the ferry! Like the color of that bike for sure. Nice color complements with your gear, too.

Raffi, those pics look like in the movies where the girls stand out in a glass window case and advertise their services. Are you renting out your bike or what? LOLLLLLLLL Just teasing, cool lights, even cooler bike.

Here's my 2011 520 that I rode across the USA last year, Had about 20 thousands miles on it in 2 years and had to warranty it because one of the eyelets broke on tour, if I welded it back on it would've voided the warranty so I Got a new 2013 frame for free! I loved my 2011 though. Lot of good memories on the back of it! We never walked a hill the whole way across the USA! Just got a Mavic A719 rear wheel on my 2013 and getting a brooks saddle soon! I plan on riding down to south america in the next couple of years!

Howdy! I'm new here. I just thought I'd share a couple of pics of my brand new 520 (2013, in "metallic bronze"). I got a green Brooks B-17 for it right away, threw some fenders on there, and have since switched out the stock pedals for some black Shimano A530 SPD touring pedals. I've only been riding it as a commuter so far, but I hope to start putting some miles on before too long! I've only had it for a couple of months, but I love it!

Off subject vertigo, but did you get to Fort Ticonderoga, and the Shorham Inn? Is this tour in the fall?

So ,all you 520 fans....I'd like some advice. I will pull the pin on buying a new 520 probably tomorrow, but I am concerned about the stock gearing. The crank is 48/36/26, Shimano LX front, and Deore rear deraileur wth 11/32 cassette. On my mountain bike, (which I love) I have 44/32/22, and 10-32 in the back-with Deore components front/rear. I mentioned at the LBS that I wanted to swap out the chain rings to have a 50 or 52, 34/22 and they said no because the front derailleur can't handle the travel. So what can I use in the Shimano group that is mountain or "trekking" quality? Also, am I setting myself up for alot of noise and adjusting while riding? I had originally wanted to go XTR or 105 at the least, but after quoting something like $800 for the XTR stuff and then saying that it's for road use really, not really for touring bike that should have solid mountain bike quality components on it. My intentions are to do a supported cross country tour next year, so I will not be carrying a ton of gear, and I doubt that I would ever tour unsupported. Anyone added S&S couplers to their 520?
