Everyone talks about pepper spray, we are not allowed weapons of self defence in Australia, so we just end up getting attacked and hurt. Homemade capsicum juice in a in a small squirt bottle is what I use for dogs. But I have to be careful as I am usually towing a dog behind me. Other than that a big stick, yelling at dog and sometimes standing your ground making enough noise until it backs off or owner comes to the rescue. The last one is about 1 in 10 times that this works.

I witnessed a rather stupid bulldog chase after a deer once at top speed, only to get tangled up in a barb wire fence.

I yelled very sternly in Spanish at a nasty dog today and combined with crossing into the oncoming lane with a car approaching, and slowing down, thankfully worked, cuz he was an aggressive son of a gun.

I've tried everything. My new method is just to dismount. I like the stick idea. We have an old wooden fungo bat from my son's baseball days that is light that I think might work with multiple dogs.


Mace off the bike is safer and more accurate.

Dismounting, and then going through the motions of aggressively picking up a rock (there doesn't actually need to be a rock -- this works well on pavement, with no rocks around) -- and aggressively cocking your arm as if you are about to throw it, and (optional) going through the motions of aggressively throwing it, works well with over 90% of dogs.

Yelling can be added to the mix, though it usually isn't necessary.

Pepper spray as backup -- usually not necessary, but adds another layer of security.

home depot has all your dog-repellent needs:

one 1 meter long piece of wooden 3/4" dowel
one 3/4" steel pipe end cap
one dab of super glue.
one set of spring-metal broom holders
one set of hose clamps

use the hose clamps to secure the broom holder clips to your bar ends.
work some threads onto the end of the dowel, then superglue the end cap on.
now mount your dog-basher into the clips.

clips hold securely over rough roads, but fast & easy to remove in emergency.
you can cut the length of the dowel to put the steel cap at your ankle when swung.

used this for years commuting in alburquerque where dogs were left out to roam.
you could go without the end cap, but then much less effective.
guaranteed to knock the teeth out of an attacking pitbull's mouth. :thumb:

10 year old thread but there is some misinformation about sprays in it. For the sake of those reading...

Fogger sprays should not be used or you risk spraying yourself. Bear spray is illegal in many places. Bear spray canisters are big and there really is no need for something that strong or large.

"Mace" or other CN/CS/tear gas type sprays should not be used. These are the sprays where an attacker keeps coming after being sprayed and should not be used. If the attacker, like a stupid or raging dog can't feel pain then CN/CS/tear inflammatory agents will be ineffective. They can also cause permanent damage. CN/CS/tear gas sprays are old technology.

You want OC type pepper spray which is made from hot peppers. OS spray is not an inflammatory agent but an irritant. Eyes slam shut and the attacker starts gasping for air immediately whether they can feel pain or not. Good OC pepper spray will shut a dog down immediately. I know this from experience. It wears off completely and does no permanent damage to the dog.

I spray dogs regularly in rural Georgia. The absolute best product is Sabre Red Pepper Gel in the "Tactical" canister. Gel will not blow back in the wind. It is about $20 and shoots 18 feet. Animal control officers in two different counties recommended this product to me.This is the most humane way to deal with a dog. Remember that it wears off completely in a few hours and does no damage to the animal.
