Southern Tier- The Details

Hi Everyone-

I am starting the Southern Tier route (W-E) on April 1st. I am about to buy my plane ticket and trying to figure out a few small details. I would like to ship my bike to a bike shop near the beginning of the route so they can put it together and have it ready when I arrive. Any suggestions? I am planning on arriving 1 or 2 days early. Any recommended places to stay near the beginning of the route that perhaps many other bikers have stayed before me? Should I take a taxi from the airport or is there a better way to get where I'm going?

Thanks for all of you help,
Angela

Bikes: Specialized Tarmac Expert, 2002 TREK 520, Schwinn Mesa WINTER BIKE, Huffy Rock Creek 29er, 1970s-era Ross ten speed. All my bikes are highly modified(except the Tarmac) yet functional, and generally look beat to ****. .

Hello Angela.

You might pose this question on the crazyguyonabike website. You'd get plenty of help. I haven't done the ST myself so I can't help with your question.

San Diego Hostels are a good organization that puts on a Christmas Bike ride each year. I haven't stayed at the hostel itself (I tried one December 25th evening but somehow happened to connect when everyone was out) but I've enjoyed their 6-day Christmas Ride three times

I don't have recommendations for bike shops, but looks like there are a few out there (I've typically flown, ridden or driven with my bike when going through San Diego): https://www.bicyclingsandiego.com/Pages/shops.html

I found a Performance Bike shop that was within a mile of a motel which had airport shuttle service. I found these by searching on the internet and making a few phone calls. That was five years ago so I won't provide any specifics now, they probably wouldn't be current. Anyway, I arrived by plane, caught the hotel shuttle, walked to the bike shop, got my bike which was ready to ride, rode to the hotel and had it packed by 6:00 P.M. Left the next morning. You are thinking right in my view.

I would add that you are cutting it close to get the bike shipped that far, received, unpacked and ready to ride before you arrive. I shipped the bike at least two weeks prior to my arrival. The most inconvenient case would be to arrive there and your bike be still enroute.
