buzzman nailed it as far as the experience of bicycle touring goes, as well as other experiences in life.
But to answer the video's question about perception, in American culture at least, yesterday's outrageous is today's ordinary and tomorrow's boring. |
Well obviously it is boring. Like trying to raise money by eating a slice of toast.
Bike Touring is still well outside some people's comfort zone, but not worth donating money for. Some guy hiked the length of England nude; the current record for climbing El Capitan is two an a half hours +, where it originally took weeks, and regularly takes multiple days. I think it is admirable to try to raise money for charity, but somewhat pathetic to imagine people will be so smitten by your cycling daring do that they will inundate you with money for going where thousands have gone before. Bike touring is one of those sports that just keeps going downhill achievement wise. When Thomas Stevens originally went around the world at a time when people had never seen a bike (penny farthing in his case); sometimes never seen a westerner; there were long sections without roads. That was an achievement, and he wrote a readable and interesting account. Vs. guys today who won't leave if they have to use a bike with a freewheel on it while cycling across state. |
