Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill riders?

I'm planning on taking a few days and tour-camping from Hillsborough to Statesville and back.
So far I've got a loop with: Hillsborough(start), High Point, Statesville, Asheboro, Pittsboro, HIllsborough
as my main "landing points". I figure 4-5 days out.

If any locals are familiar with the roads, best routes, camping, pros/cons of riding the areas, etc. Please
get in touch with me through PM or post here. Thanks

Here's a GMap of the loop:

I'm in the Charlotte area, but I've ridden a part of your route within the past few months. As long as you stay off the primary numbered US and NC highways as much as practical, there is some good riding along your projected path. There is a significant network of low volume country roads throughout the area, so you should not have much problem finding a comfortable route that works for you.

I suggest getting in touch with the NCDOT Bicycle/Pedestrian program and ordering some of the bike route maps they've created. They just released the Rowan County bike map (Salisbury). In particular, I recommend Bringle Ferry Road as the route from Salisbury to Denton, which provides a low traffic crossing of the Yadkin River near the dam. The maps for Chatham, Randolph, Stanley and Alamance counties have been around for awhile. I've found all of them to be very useful. They will give you some good information for more detailed planning of your trip. Bike route signs have also been erected along most of the routes to help you find your way, but stick with the maps as the signs sometimes disappear. The DeLorme North Carolina Atlas and Gazateer will help fill in any counties that aren't covered by the state maps.

Are you riding BikeFest this year? I'm thinking of doing that one again.

Thanks PurpleK for the great info, it's exactly the kind of thing I need.. This will be my first multi-day (more than 3 days camping) self-contained bike tour. Also hoping to get some fishing done while I'm on the road.

I have not ridden Bike Fest, but now I see that I must do at least a 62 this year.

Greensboro, here. There are some pretty good roads in the country, and I enjoy the area. Haven't done much except for around GSO, though.

Guess I should have titled the thread "Eastern NC Riders" or something like that ...?

How is the 70 through Greensboro? I've driven it from here and seems ridable by
bike, no less than my commute roads.
