Handlbar tape with existing pad

Hello, I got a world traveler for a price that was almost free so there are some parts that need some work one are the handlebars. I was going to put handlebar tape on it and strip off the busted up padding, but I was unsure if I should put the tape over the busted padding. I would like some advice, because once I take off the padding that is there I can never put it back on and have it the same that it was before. Thanks!

I would leave the old padding and put tape on top of it. I did that with my bike and really like having the extra padding for my hands. Just make sure to buy extra tape because you'll be going around a thicker bar.

Over the old slide-on tube padding? Ew. I would take it off. If you want extra padding just put on a double thickness of gel tape or something.

It would depend on the condition of the padding. If it's the foam, "Grab-On" kind, I say take it off. I used to use that. It broke down in the course of a year or so and lost most of its ability to cushion. Nowadays there are gel pads you can put on under your bar tape, and there is bar tape that is called gel that is pretty soft. One thing to keep in mind: there's no law that says you can only use one thickness of bar tape. I've used the gel pads plus two layers of tape. My bars look awfullly fat, but they're soft and I don't get numb hands like I used to.

Hardcore riders undoubtedly think I'm a Fred, for this and other reasons. What, me worry?

I say yank the padding.

If you want extra cushion, use Fizik Bar-Gels. They're working very well for me these days.

You could also put some old inner tubes under your tape.

What I decided to do was just rip off the old padding since it was in such terrible shape and put on the the handlebar tape, it looks much nicer now, but has no where near the cushion it had before. It doesn't matter to me since this bike is just a temporary thing, I can just change positions if I start getting sore. The old inner tubes sounds like a great idea if I had any I would have done that. My next thing on the list is to give my rims a once over with some steel wool.
