Even with 200 applicants, 42/200 = %20 odds. It depends on how much experience they are looking for. I am guessing that there are a lot of people who have never toured applying. Maybe that is what they want, but that could also lead to a dismal success rate, unless they withheld the $3000 for finishing the tour.

On the other end of the spectrum, they probably don't want someone who has toured across America every summer for the last 5 years and is just adding another trip under their belt and collecting a paycheck.
My guess is they want young good looking riders that will advertise 42 Below for them.

Funny thing is, back when I was young and good looking, and was knocking back the liquer, there is no way I could contemplate such a ride. Now that I don't drink any more its possible. I can just see a days ride after a promotional binge.

I asked if it would be supported or not and they answered that there will be two 15 passenger vans following allong. I don't know if thats two per group, or if its one van per group.

I can only guess that SAG wagons would include ferrying really hungover people up a mountain.

If accepted, I will really be reading the fine print.

I'd disagree. There are all those that know the BFF organizers in respective cites that applied, the forums (such as local nyc boards) that are not indexed in search engines, the people who applied from seeing it on a blog without discussing it further. I bet they've had many more than 200 applicants. And this whole thing is being put together in a tight timeframe. I don't envy the person sitting on their side of the inbox.

I think you are right for the most part but I'm guessing there will be a mix of cycling styles. Include older experienced tourers to get a "Karate Kid and Mr. Miyagi" dynamic for the documentary. Include recumbent riders, fixters, roadies, rich/poor, male/female, etc., make it a bit of a melting pot to broaden the appeal. No one wants to see footage of 40 20-somethings sitting around a campfire dissing each others taste in music. If they stuck to only young good looking riders they'd only be appealing to a small segment of their potential market, a market segment that might have been reached better/more cheaply through an alleycat race and custom painted "42 Vodka" fixed gears than through something so unhip as a bike tour. (Not that I'm complaining!)

Why oh why did their email say that they'd get back to us "early next week". I've been excited/anxious for days. This must be why I never enter contests. I hope that in New York the week starts on Wednesday.

I see some reality tv every once in a while, and it seems to me that such a thing would not be out of the realm of possibility for the public. I stayed at a friends house for a couple days and had to watch Paris Hiltons BFF show a while ago. I now have no faith in what people want to see

I also have some checking the mail every day including the day that I sent off the boxtops for my propeller beanie syndrome. I just hope that they will do the courtesy of sending a thanks but no thanks email. Pretty sure that they will.

From my understanding, this is all coming together last minute which is the reason why you have not heard back yet. (Its standard for a sponsor to throw a lot of money at a situation last minute in the marketing bizzo.)

I was told they are in fact looking for a wide range of different types of people, as this is without a doubt a marketing tour that just happens to employ bikes. The ride will be fully supported because at the end of the day, bottom line, from the client perspective, the reason why they are providing money is to make sure that events occur to promote their product. Inclimate weather? Get in the van! we gotta get to (city name here) and (bar name here) by drunk o clock!

For the people chosen- Im sure the trip will be what you make of it.
Yet of all the crazy marketing schemes ive heard of, this one offers the ability to get paid to wake up everyday (for 55 days) and the only responsibility will be to get on your bicycle and ride. That alone would make drinking a bit of vodka while wearing a branded jersey, completely worth it. And i have high hopes for the quality of people that the concept attracts.

I'm really digging the idea of my stinky, sweaty, grease-smeared, spandex-clad self standing in a group of similarly people, explaining how cool it is to drink New Zealand potato liquor to a bunch of astonished bar patrons.

Whomever is organizing this deserves some serious congratulations for throwing together a fully supported tour this complex this quickly. I may be waiting anxiously but I don't begrudge them my wait.

They have it narrowed down to 72 riders.

42 riders will ride together from NY and NJ.
Then they will split.
One on a Northern Route. One on a Southern Route.
Each group will have Two SAG Vans and a Equipment Truck along.

I am one of the 72 still in.

I talked on the phone with someone today who said it is now down to 54 potential riders. He also said it would split in Philly...but that's just a small detail.

Oh man, I just realized that I mistyped my phone number. That would suck if I missed out because of a phone call. Does anybody have a phone number for whomever is organizing this?

The Southern route is 3800 miles. 70 mile per day average.

The Northern route is 4200 miles. 76 mile per day average.

No days would be more than 98 miles.

We are getting conflicting information, ha. I was told the S. route would be shorter. Doesn't really matter, though. Hope we all get the good news today!

4 years, basically to go to UNCG, where I just finished up my undergrad. I like it here, though.

Also, I got an email requesting paperwork and stuff. So I think I'm in. Anyone else?

So is it finalized already? It seems like a bunch of bikeforums members made it. I hope that the reason I didn't make the cut was not because of my mistyped phone number. I sent them an email, but it might be too late. If anybody has a contact number for the coordinator, I would appreciate a pm.
