If your hard drive crashed there is software out there than can possibly recover them. Years ago that happened to me. A really smart IT guy who worked with my GF was able to remove the drive and use licensed software to pick off the thousands of photos to an external drive. I then downloaded them to my new computer.

No. I’d say it’s a problem for you. How is responding to a zombie thread going to assist with recovering lost photos?

both of you guys--this really touches on the whole new reality of photo archiving that comes with digital photos. I worked in commercial photography for 25 years + and the whole backup issue is a real concern. We have always said that there will be millions of families that will not have photos from parts of peoples lives simply because of hard drive failures, mistakenly dumping stuff, etc
Big topic, but the main thing is to make an effort to have an external hard drive that constantly copies and backs up your main computer. Doesn't help with a house fire or theft, just as copying stuff "in the cloud" can have some issues as well.....
good luck mr 10 wheels. My computer tech friend has told me that failed hard drive recovery stuff is generally expensive, but being in the states with such a larger population, I hope you can find a less expensive tech person---mind you, a failed hd can unfortunately mean a physically damaged disc, so as I'm sure you're both aware, there are no promises.
and most importantly mr 10 wheels, all the best with the full time caregiving duties.

And why in general, ssd drives are the norm now , at least no physical failures like with a spinning disc. Way faster bootup etc also.
Doesn't solve fire or theft or mistakenly getting rid of 10 years of photos....

I've also gotten into the habit of making hard copy books of my favorite photos as an addendum to digital caches. You can build them online and they print and ship. Expensive, but cool to have a coffee table book of your own shots and words. Like an updated version of the ol photo album. One cool feature is when you have old family pictures that multiple family members might want. I created a family tree type book and printed 3 copies, one for each brother, so now we all have the same pictures.

I do not keep massive amounts of data on my hard drive and after a trip I cull out the out of focus photos, duplicates, etc. Thus, I can store all of my computer data on only a couple memory cards.
It is amazing how cheap a 128 gb micro SD card is that can hold a ton of data. I try to back up all my data quarterly and put that on my calendar to do. My last backup was done on Aug 10, a month and a half ago. I like SD cards for that, my laptop has a slot in it for SD cards, I think it is faster than using a different type of memory that uses USB.
My photos from 10 years ago were with a 3 megapixel camera, those take a lot less room than my current 16 megapixel camera photos.
