I tend to tour in Germany. With all that fine beer, how could I not? I try not to get drunk, though. A hangover is perhaps the worst thing to have on a bike with a long road ahead of you.

Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

I've tried drinking various kinds of beer, but beer is just disgusting. I'd much rather have a diet coke or an orangina. I've tried various kinds of wine, and there's only a limited types of that I like, and only in limited quanities. I get tired of it very quickly. Again, most of the time I'd rather have a diet coke or an orangina.
Plus, when I arrive in an area in the evening, I either ...
a) am too tired from the day's riding to want to go out anywhere
b) am feeling energetic enough to want to explore the area a bit rather than holing up in some pub

I like the camping part of touring. I cary a small soft fold up Kelty cooler for stopping at a grocery store at the end of the day to pick up meat and beer. There is nothing better then sitting around a fire drinking beer at the end of the day. Then again I am from Wisconsin and mostly tour in Wisconsin.

I try to hit every brew pub on or near the route. I love good beer and like to try the sampler sets, or at least the stout or IPA. I rarely drink to excess, so the only effect is that my calorie count for the day can be rather high. The Oregon Coast then on to Arcata/Eureka is a great beer tour.

Oh yeah and last week on tour while camping free in the park in Mitchell Oregon dinner for me and my buddy was two sixers of Busch and a free loaf of slightly moldy poundcake. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Always, everyday. Everything in moderation, including moderation.
Nothing like three or four nice cold ones after a long ride. Or a fine big meal with an excellent bottle of wine. Yep, life's too short.
In some Muslim countries, I've resorted to sipping my libations from water bottle. And have resolved never to again tour in any place where alcohol is not easily available and/or is discouraged from consumption in public

Hi,
depends on the country/region. Europe - of course, Africa - of course, Islamic area - none, North America / Australia - difficult to get (no liquor store close to the campground, drinking in public not allowed), Asia - sometimes, South America - of course. In the Carribian I always carry a bottle rum with me
I don't drink wine because of the taste. I'am afraid of a tour in Scottland. I think the single malts will reduce my daily distance a lot...
I don't care if it's in morning, afternoon or night. Always depends of:
- what are the options (In Croatia a 0,25l coke costs the same as 0,5l beer - so decide for more liquid :-)) or (In Cuba I ordered a breakfast - they had nothing to drink instead of beer or rum)
- do I like it right now (during the day)
- is there a possibility to try something new (rum museum in Cuba or local beer in Africa - [btw terrible])
- In the evening depends on the mood
I only have on rule: don't drink until the black out.
Sometimes I meet nice people - we drunk until 5 AM - when they to go bed I proceed the next day distance...

With dinner or after a particularly hot day. Though I did make the mistake of getting absolutely loaded in Marquette, MI last year. You see, there was this brew pub and they had awesome food and there was this adorable server...
Anyway, probably had the most painful 80 miles of my life the next day. Holy hangover.

Actually, my consumption on tour is less than when I am at home. Just works out that way for me, no special reason.

I drink about a beer every week on average, have gone months without a drink (not intentionally either, just didn't feel like it). But touring? I consider touring to be a break from the norm and routine, so invariably I end up having a few drinks at least one night. I do enjoy it, and I tend to look for the brew pubs -I like a strong tasting beer (acutally I much prefer a dry cider, but not many countries have that).

If you like cider I strongly recommend Normandy (northern France - D-Day area). Really nice region for touring by bike, good ciders, and if you like sea food it's just paradise I did the atlantic coast line from north to south

I avoid booze while touring, especially in the summer when dehydration can result. Hangovers do nothing for your speed. Generally I am a non-drinker anyway.
On the other hand there are some countries where I'd like to be drunk as skunk the whole time I am cycling - starting off with a six pack for breakfast with Corn Flakes and ending with several bottles of wine for lunch and dinner with stops at every drinking establishment in between and after dinner dancing and drinking till dawn. Yahooo!
Being barfingly drunk and obnoxious would make me tolerate obnoxious motorists better in countries with the most obnoxious motorists (like the United States and Canada, for instance).

A little off topic, but do beware local customs/religions while drinking in other countries...
Kuala Lumpur 21/07/2009: – A religious court in Malaysia has sentenced a tearful Singaporean Muslim model to six strokes of the cane after she drank beer in a nightclub, reports said on Tuesday. Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, pleaded guilty to consuming alcohol at a hotel nightclub in the eastern state of Pahang last year, the New Straits Times newspaper reported.
‘We feel the sentence is fair after going through the prosecution’s argument and since the rotan (cane) is provided for in the law,’ Pahang Sharia High Court judge Abdul Rahman Yunus said, according to the paper. ‘The rotan is aimed at making the accused repent and serves as a lesson to Muslims,’ he added, also fining Kartika RM5,000 (S$2,035).
The model, who cried when the judgment was delivered, said she would appeal. State religious officials could not be reached for comment on the case.
Malaysia, which has large Indian and Chinese minorities freely enjoying alcohol, has a two-track legal system. Civil courts operate alongside state-based syariah courts, which can try Muslims for religious offences. – AFP (Title provided by The Mighty Pen.
