i can't say i've ever drank on tour (i'll be doing my first one this fall), but i can say that i'll probably have a beer at some point. after all, beer and camping go together like peanutbutter and cellery.

My dinner one night

Oh my goodness! I farking love Shasta! It's my Faygo when I'm not in Michigan.

Also, how was that dinner? I've always found mixing dairy and beer to be a bit of a gamble...

this was a long time ago. It wasn't a bright idea, I stopped for a little ocean appreciation at a State park south of Carmel and some huge squirrels came out of the rocks and then a police officer showed up asking for ID. There I am skinny young guy wearing bike shorts, wool jersey, narrow black cycling shoes click clacking on the ground and the cop drives up and walks up the path to me. Apparently he was following up on a call about someone harrassing people in the park but I sure didn't look the part. total buzz kill. I rode angry and fast for a while after that.

Went to sleep in a cemetery on a hill then woke up the next day feeling great and had a great ride.

A pint of bourbon or rum in the pannier was SOP (in a plastic flask with the metal shot-glass cap.). A nice tot was welcome at breakfast. If beer was readily available in the evening, I'd drink one or two as well. What the heck? You're on vacation.

I enjoy a beer or two at the end of a long day in the saddle but experience has taught me that moderation makes the following day a lot more pleasant.

Mind you, sometimes even one is too much.

I once spent a day trying to ride my bike into a monster Belgian headwind before eventually grinding to a halt in the picturesque town of Ghent. (Yeah I know, who goes on a cycling vacation in a sceneryless country like Belgium?). Anyway, I was absolutely wiped so decided a quick beer would hit the spot before finding somewhere for dinner.

There was just me and the barman in the place and he asked me if I wanted a light or a dark beer. "I dunno" I said. "Dark I suppose." I didn't know that in Belgium, "dark" is a euphemism for "So strong, it would knock out an elephant." It came in a goldfish bowl sized glass and the fumes alone were enough to give me a buzz. It took about an hour to drink the thing and by then I'd decided that I could probably skip dinner and just go for a lie down.

Fortunately, my hotel wasn't far away because all the way back, the walls of each building I passed took turns at leaping out and punching me, while the sidewalk rolled up and down like the Atlantic. Apparently I made it home though because I woke up the next morning fully dressed, but half off the bed.

If the Belgians ride after drinking that stuff then it's a wonder there are any of them left.

One of the joys of touring for me is trying the local beers of the regions I pass through, so yes, I have a beer when there are interesting choices.

Yeah, I particularly like to try all the various IPAs...
