Just a few hours ago we pedaled across the Panama Canal!! WOO HOO!! It's way too hard to believe we have actually pedaled these bikes all the way here from the northern coast of Alaska. WOO HOO!!!!

Proud of you.. Great achievement.. But, I've read of kidnappings as one approaches the jungles north of Colombia.. Many skip the area, I think known as "Darien... ." Did you think to check out security concerns in certain areas. . ?

We've heard of problems in the border area with Colombia, but that area is next to impossible to cross on land anyway. We will be taking a boat to Cartagena from near Colon. David is actually up near the border with Costa Rica and we cycled through there a couple weeks ago - all was well.

Did you get a little emotional crossing? I always get that way when touring..... Have a moment of "oh my gosh are you kidding me?"
Glad to hear all is going well. Best wishes from Whidbey Island, WA.

We couldn't get emotional while crossing - it's a huge narrow bridge with no shoulder whatsoever. It was after we made it to the hotel that I looked back on it and started getting all emotional. But we're here! We are really, honestly, truly here!

We headed out to the locks today to watch them raise ships up. What a concept! It was really neat to watch those enormous ships move through the locks!

Good job! How did you guys learn Spanish for the trip?
I want to spend several years in SA but I need to learn Spanish and improve my Portuguese.

Anna - I learned Spanish while in the Peace Corps in HOnduras. Daryl has just kinda picked it up. DAvy and John still donīt speak much, but we will probably look for a language school in Colombia or Ecuador. We wanted to put them in one in HOnduras, but there werenīt any in the area we wanted to stay. There are language schools all over and you could easily stay a couple weeks to take lessons.
Thanks Pdxsushi!
We are now on the Atlantic side of Panama and our boat for Colombia leaves tomorrow monring!

That's so cool! I've just begun to read up on your adventures, but they're truly inspiring.
One note, just to avoid disappointment - the toilet's don't actually spin backwards... and if they do, it's because of the direction the water pours in, not the Coriolis Effect.
