I use the mks touring pedals, there platform pedals. Now I only have to carry one pair of comfortable shoes on tour.
Before going to platform pedals I used shimano m-540 pedals,I didn't like the shoes that I had for them though and maybe that is why I switched to the mks pedals. |
I used crankbrothers eggbeaters on 4 tours. 1 week, 2 month longs and a year. I also use them when at home.
I'd been thinking about trying some of the more platform type crankbrothers, but haven't gotten around to it yet. -If I ever have the opportunity to do an "out there" tour (Great Divide, trans Chang Tang etc), I will likely go with clips & straps and good hiking boots. |
I thought about trying the crank bros. platforms. For some reason I've had bad luck with the candy c's. So I bought some nice wide super lightweight mountain biking platforms w/ toe straps. They work good enough for me, will see if these bearings last longer.

I use SPD pedals. I prefer to be "hooked in" while I'm riding, especially when I'm tired. The SPD cleats are walkable, since they're recessed. The only real shoes I take on a tour is my good Pearl Izumi riding shoes. I also take a weigh-nothing pair of flip-flops for around the campsite and showers.

I ran crankbrothers pedals for years and while they were light and cheap...they certainly were not durable. I get a season out of a set before a rebuild (x3 each bike's pedals would die once a year) and I would be lucky to get maybe 6 months out of a set of cleats.
I recently switched to shimano spd's and have NO regrets at all. You have more pedal options and I know people running spd's that have seen years and years of abuse without ever being touched. Actually I have only seen 1 or 2 sets fail in my years of riding. |
MKS GR9
http://www.velo-orange.com/mksgr9pedal.html I'll be getting these soon with the MTB toe clips, many BF recommendations for these pedals in other threads |
