Burley Flatbed for Touring?
I'm considering a few trailer options, and am looking at the Burley Flatbed. The pros are that it looks more stable than a BOB trailer, and more versatile for the occasional cargo / utility tasks than the Burley Nomad. I've also heard that with the Nomad, water can kick up from the wheels and into the compartments.
Any thoughts / feedback? |
Since it has two wheels, it's bound to be infinitely more stable than a BOB. Certainly when you stand while riding.
I don't believe I've had water intrusion problems with my Nomad because of the actual trailer wheels kicking water in. But the bikes rear wheel can kick in some water past the front flap of the cover. I'm still trying to figure out how to make a mud flap that reaches all the way to the ground. The flatbed is a great trailer, you'd just have to bag and tie down all your stuff. |
My Bob is completely stable when riding. While parked and trying to load it, it can swing and become unstable, but it's not a big deal. The Bob's single wheel follows your bike wheels, so if you avoid obstacles with your bike, your Bob will avoid the obstacles as well.
There are advanatages to a two-wheeled trailer too; I just wanted to stick up for Bob. ;) |
Two wheel trailers:
I have a two-wheel trailer (Carry Freedom Y-Frame), which I've used on a short tour in Cyprus. Because I tested a BOB Yak in the past, I think I can give you some pros an cons:
Two-wheel: - Lets the bike handle normally. The bike can be tilted as if it was empty, very helpful on steep climbs. The steering is quite close to normal. - The trailer is as-light-as a good single-wheel trailer. - Two-wheel trailers fold flat, which is great for storing, and also for taking a bus/train/plane. - Two-wheel trailer has a serious disadvantage on really rough trails. It has more drag, it requires more maneuvering to go around obstacles, and in can flip over if one of the wheels hits large stone. For long distance, loaded tours, I think two-wheels trailer are better. For rough off-roads, single-wheel are the choise. Oren |
