Experience with Rocky Mountain Cyclery touring wheels?

Rocky Mountain Cyclery, a "real" LBS in Loveland, Colorado, always is offering some good prices on 36H touring wheels on their eBay store: Shimano XT hubs, Mavic A719 rims, $199 for the pair. [EDIT: this is wrong - the wheels have Mavic A119 rims - see correction below]

Any users here have experience with them?

I've done a search in the forums here and seen 3 or 4 positive comments from the past couple of years; there was one 1 slightly negative comment (which suggests the wheels were good but needed to be tensioned when they were delivered). Otherwise the bits of info in prior threads here was positive.

Seem like good price for solid wheels but thought I would check first...

Here's their storefront

I bought a set of these rims back in February and, for whatever reason, the spokes do need to be retensioned but their customer service is excellent. For the price I'd buy another set from them in a heartbeat.

I just don't understand why they only sell touring wheels with 135 mm rear spacing. I contacted them about some 130 mm wheels, and they told me they don't sell them. Apparently they don't realize that some people actually tour on road bikes.

Bikes: At one point it was a Trek 700 something. Now it have Velocity Psycho wheels, a tape job. Thumb shifters (Shimano Deore). Corncob grouping, and drop bar ends all wrapped up in tape.

Or... there hasn't been a demand for it. I think it would be wrong to assume they are just incompetent.

I like the fact that they at least sell two grades of 135mm, 36-spoke wheels suitable for touring or rugged commuting (one with LX hubs and A319 rims, and one with XT hubs and A719 rims). That's more than I've seen online elsewhere.

It doesn't cost much to have a local guy or girl tension your spokes, does it? Or buy a tensionmeter and do it yourself. I'm not recomending anything. I'm just talking here.

For touring I want good quality. I've had a tour ruined by a series of broken spokes (when I was young and foolish) and I'm paranoid. I'm willing to spend money for a bullet-proor rear wheel. I'd want one with double-butted spokes. Otherwise the wheels you describe sound good and very reasonable.

I got my wheels for my other roadbike and my mountain bike online, thought I don't remember the names of the vendors. Both were really good deals, and I haven't had any problems yet after more than a year.

My 2 cents (and probably not worth much more.)

Have bought three sets of wheels from them - two pair XT with mavic ex 729(26") , One set XT mavic a719 (700c)

All were good quality builds and all under 200 bucks. A savings of at least 100-150 bucks over retail- the only gripe, and it is minor, is they sold me silver rims and hubs once (buy it now on ebay), but i ended up with black because it was all that was left in stock and ebay didnt reflect this.... not a big deal - I dont ride a rivendell.

They don't need to be rebuilt- they are hand built wheels... but if you want to, hey, whatever its your time.

They will build you a set on 130mm hubs, but not for the half price deal... you pay retail for something other than what they have listed. Dont like it? cold-set your frame or cough up the cash. I cold-set a trek 620 for the XT hubs because I was too cheap to pay full retail for the 130mm hubs. Your bob jackson will live...

I bought a set of tandem wheels from them and all was well except that all spoke nipples became corroded. I think they advertised use of brass nipples, but it seems mine rusted.

I replaced those nipples which was good experience and allowed me to retention all spokes.

Yes, I would buy from them again.

the corrosion was probably galvanic corrosion from the eyelets on the rims and the nipples, or the nuipples and the spokes... this frequently happens between metals of different types. Ive had that happen too. (not on the wheels I mentioned above, just generally in the past)

I have a set of these on my commuter/utility hybrid. They have been good. I was 230 lbs when I started using them.

I didn't say or imply that they were incompetent. I sent them an email asking about 130 mm wheels, and they told me they only stocked 135 mm. That strikes me as odd more than anything. Seems like they would want more business. It's not like 130 mm hubs are hard to find or unusual.

You're right - thanks for correcting me.

I've seen them offer these wheels with A719's before, and I misread what I found last night. I can't recall the price they had on the wheels w/A719's, but they have always seemed to be good deals.

I have a set of the 319's (36 spoke) with XT hubs that I bought from these folks...took them to my LBS after receiving them for a quick check (As i always do when I buy wheels over the Net) and they were true and tensioned perfectly. I am quite satisfied and will buy from them again!

Good ,fair priced shop!!!

I bet it was a good bit more!

It looks like a reasonable source for wheels at decent prices.

I just received a set of these wheels in the mail, and they weren't really the quality I was expecting. Inside the rim, some of the spoke holes are a little chewed up, like somebody was very hasty while building these. Does this match anyone else's experience? I'm going to try contacting the shop today I suppose. Here's a thread I started last night in the Mechanics forum, with pictures:

I have two sets of 48 spoke tandem wheels with sun rims and shimano tandem hubs they built for me. Great wheels, no issues at all.
