Northern Tier - Alternate to NYC

I tried the search function, but to no avail. Apologies if this info is out there already.

I'd like to do the Northern Tier this summer, ending in NYC, not Maine. Anyone have an alternate route for that last 1/3rd of the trip? Thanks!

Bikes: Specialized Tarmac Expert, 2002 TREK 520, Schwinn Mesa WINTER BIKE, Huffy Rock Creek 29er, 1970s-era Ross ten speed. All my bikes are highly modified(except the Tarmac) yet functional, and generally look beat to ****. .

You could just cut off on the 17 right before you come into NY and take it to Binghamton. Then just cut down to the city. That's what I'd do.

Look to connect to RT 9 South, or to Putnam & Westchester County to get to the North & south County trails that will get you into Yonkers to the Hudson river Greenway to Battery Park. Trail maps forthe north/south can be found at the Westchester county site and for NYC, Transportation Alternatives site

Here is the link to the NY DOT Biking site.

Here are some other New York links that might be of interest.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Very helpful. From the look of things, the TransAm route runs north along Lake Erie and intersects with NY Bike Route #17. I could just hop on that and head east almost all the way into the city (as you all suggested). Has anyone taken these routes before?

Are you doing the Transam or the Northern Tier? You mention both in your posts...

I've ridden the 17 all through NY. It's beautiful.

Northern Tier. Sorry about that. I'm in the habit of thinking of it as a TransAm ride, even if it's on the NT route.

Thanks for the tips, looking forward to the ride.
