what kind of shifters did you use?

older shimanos. They have a a spring inside them so I have to tighten up a bolt to keep them from shifting for me. However I don't know if I assembled them correctly, they were apart when I found them.

Thank you. It's a 1997 Frontier GS frame, it is my new all-purpose bike. I bought it new in 1997 and it's been sitting in my garage/shed for quite awhile now. I decided the frame would be a good donor for a winter build up. I just finished assembly on Tuesday, wrapped the bars tonight. The only parts carried over from stock are the frame, seat post (which I may swap out), canti's, and deraillers.

Cool, awesome conversion- I like the look of a MTB with drop bars. I was tempted to do something similar with a Rock Hopper.

Was the frontier on of Schwinn's "homegrown" bikes?

thanks. It was a fun project, I would love the opportunity to do another - preferably with somebody elses money! I am yet to ride it, except for a couple of minutes on the trainer to test gears. Not sure on the homegrown detail, when I bought it new, it was nice looking and affordable. It's tough, I used to abuse the hell out of it in trails and creek beds and it took it like a champion. I hate to think what the total weight of the bike is, it has to be close to 30 lbs, if not more. I lost interest riding off road so I put commuter tires on it (Michelin City) and plan to get front & rear racks for it. Looking forward to doing a couple of weekenders this summer with it.
