Easter Touring Plans
Are you going somewhere for Easter ... a weekend tour? A hub-and-spoke tour? A longer tour? And where are you thinking of going?
|
might go for a daytrip, depending on whether.
|
I'm going to Saint George, Utah. I'm going to do a loop - several short legs to campgrounds around Saint George, then up to Zion Canyon for a few days of hiking.
|
I'm headed to the Gorges du Verdon for a 3-day tour. First tour of the season, can't wait!
|
We'll be battling headwinds and heat along the Peruvian coast. <<sigh..>>
|
I'm taking my bike on a ferry to the Netherlands and heading north to either look at some famous tulip fields or look at some empty fields, depending on whether I've judged the season correctly.

We're driving 1000 miles to Savannah, GA to visit family, and then 1000 miles home again. 4 days total, including drive time.
Of course, we're bringing our bikes with us, hoping that there's somewhere decent to ride down that way. Yes, we are 'mentally challenged'. (I used a different word on my initial post, but it was filtered by the site. But you get the idea... :-) |
Last year my kids had a complicated schedule of vacations that didn't overlap with one with one another's, nor with my wife's, which gave me an opportunity to cook up a complicated tour that left very little flexibility about the timing. If the weather didn't cooperate, we had no wiggle room. All in all it was a success, but I'd rather not do it the same way again. In fact, that tour began exactly a year ago today, bringing my daughter and me to The Historian's house, where we spent the first night.
Anyway, this year is different. My daughter had to be satisfied with a 45 mile day trip, but that's not bad for a ten year old on a three speed bike, right? Next week and the week after that, my son has two weeks off, in which I plan to plan something, weather permitting. It's tempting to plan something now, but I'm going to wait until I see three or four days of good weather coming up on the forecast, and then work with it. So I look at the weather every day... but I don't see it yet! |
I am riding 10,000 mile loop that's all up hill into a headwind wearing newspapers for shoes. :)
Seriously....The GF and I will be doing a sub-3-6 from Philly to Bull's Island in NJ. Did a long weekend there last year. Only a few people in the campground Friday night. Saturday we had the entire place to ourselves. Neat, but also sort of spooky. And now that the Black Bass Hotel has re-opened after so many years we will be able to cross the Delaware River on the pedestrian and belly up to the bar. |
At this stage I'll be doing a loop in northern NSW, taking in Minyon Falls, Casino and the Richmond Range National Park (including the forest road along Cambridge Plateau). This is contingent on the dirt road across the plateau being open after the rain we had last month.
|
Gonna do a little 2 day, one nighter to start the season next weekend. New River Trail from Galax to Pulaski Virginia, camping at nearby Claytor State Park. Maybe take an alternate route back to the car the next day. Can't wait.
|
We're having a wee bit of trouble finding a place to camp at our destination. Everything is booked!!!
|
Assuming my LIRR bicycle permit arrives in time, I'll be riding my bike from home to the LIRR station taking the train to Penn Station then to central NJ. Then I'll ride from the central NJ train station to my brother's home. A day later, I'll be doing the reverse trip. Not really a "tour" but multimodal traveling with a bicycle. Actually I'm really excited about this trip!

Here are some photos if you're interested: http://journal.goingslowly.com/2009/...us-climbs.html Enjoy your holiday! |
We should either be in Macedonia or Serbia for Easter...
Have fun on your trips everyone! |
heck, if the wether holds i may just do a mini tour instead of a daytrip.
|
Well, Plan A is out. The only place with a spot open will graciously give us a small patch of grass on which to camp in a tent with no power for two nights for ....... are you sitting down ........... $210.00. Seems that EVERYONE is going to the town I wanted to visit.
We're on to Plan B, and l'm waiting to hear back from a pivotal caravan park for that plan. Easter is a very popular travel weekend round here. |
My girlfriend and I are riding 200 miles from Carrboro, NC to my folks' place in lovely Jacksonville. We plan on camping at Raven Rock State Park Thursday and then riding 80 miles to Cliffs of the Neuse State Park on Friday (forecast says it'll be in the low 80's friday!). It will be the longest ride Erin has done--by far.
We're stickin' to small country roads. Should be quite the education in rural Eastern North Carolina. |
And we're on to Plan C now. Plan C involves sending out emails to every caravan park on the map within about a 100 km radius of where we were hoping to go to see if anything has a spot available.
|
I was up at the Grand Canyon today. It was cold and windy, but still a lot of fun. Making another trip for Easter.

We're going to stay home and do a "hub and spoke tour" from home. Yes, I know it's not really touring, but we're going to have a great time on the tandem. In training for our June Switzerland adventure.
|
Driving the family up north to Hamilton, leaving them and riding home over two days. Nicely split 200km each day stopping at National Park, with day two mostly downhill.
Should see some nice scenery up over the volcanic plateau. |
Mini Southern Tier
