It seemed like the best way to go for us at the time and it was nice to have the car for the day to see Portland and the nearby area before starting our bike tour.

Regarding car rental... check current rates for one-way as my inquiries in Summer 2009 were incredibly different rates than quoted above. I had a knee that was blowing out; I rested it a few days, cycled shorter distances and ended up with a one-way Rideshare via Craigslist (very popular in Oregon).
