Route needed, Cincinnati to Sandusky Ohio

This summer I plan to ride from Cincinnati to Portland ME and need help planning the route from my home in Cincinnati to Sandusky Ohio. We plan to pick up ACA's Erie Connector and then the Northern Tier in Kingsville Ontario a ferry ride from Sandusky across Lake Erie.

So far all I've planned in Ohio is riding the Loveland bike Trail north to just past Xenia Ohio but would like advice on the best route north of Xenia. Any Ohio riders who have information to share, it would be highly appreciated.

How about Adventure Cycling's Underground Railroad route. It uses the Loveland bike trail and goes near Sandusky. It actually connects with the Northern Tier, if I remember correctly. You could travel it to Oberlin, then continue North until SR 2, and hang a left. SR 2 is a nice ride. I used to ride it often.

You could go a little more directly to Sandusky, but the Adventure Cycling's maps are pretty nice to use.

Thanks, but actually we've considered ACA's Underground Railway route, I even bought the maps. Unfortunately the UGR route adds at least another 60 miles or a whole day to our trip and we're already fighting a time constraint.

Our current plan is to take the Little Miami Bike trail from Milford to just past Xenia then pick up 42 to 72 then Rt 4 all the way into Sandusky. I'm just not comfortable riding these busy hwys for at least 150 miles.

The Street View feature of google maps is handy. I spot checked the nature of the roadway and shoulder at several places along Rt 4 in Ohio. There was little to no shoulder and widely varying roadway surface conditions. I've been on Rt 4 in my car a couple of times and I don't remember it as particularly busy with traffic, but it's not a lonely road and there are some trucks that use it.

If it were me, I'd try real hard to ride the extra 60 miles and stay on the UGR route to Oberlein. There's a reason the ACA picks the routes they use. I'd want to enjoy they trip. Rt 4 looks like a bit too much white knuckle riding for my pleasure.

Cinci to Sandusky

I would only ride on RT4 for a mile or two at the most. I tour for the enjoyment of it and having driven RT4 from Sandusky to Springfield I wouldn't even drive it again. It is so straight and flat that I was bored to death just driving it. Also, I like the peaceful nature of back roads and RT4 is not peaceful in my opinion.

My wife and I are planning a one week tour from the Ohio River to Lake Erie this summer and will most probably follow the UGRR route from Milford to Oberlin and then break off and go to Huron.

Off on a tangent a bit - but do you have a decent route from the Ohio River to milford?

Columbus Outdoor Pursuits sells a series of Cross-Ohio route maps. There are routes from Cinci to Cleveland, Cinci to Toledo, Portsmouth to Toledo and others. The maps are not as nice as the ACA maps but are much less expensive.
