Has anyone used that Ortlieb pocket add-on?

A common complaint against the Ortlieb bags (the roller ones, at least) seems to be the lack of an external pocket. Ortlieb's website shows an accessory that looks like a small pannier. It's an external pocket that you can attach to their bags.

It looks like you actually puncture the side of the large pannier to fasten it on. I was just wondering if anyone has actually tried that, and if it lowers the waterproofiness (tm) of the bags.

Thanks,
James

I'd also like to know what users thought of the pocket add-on too!

Indeed you need to puncture the bags in order to put screws through, which fasten the outer bag holding system.
I do not use them myself, but those using them reccommend them to carry oil/grease or other liquids that can ruin your stuff in case of leakage.

Check out the english ortlieb page if you have more questions:

My touring partner put them on his front rollers last year. He suffered no leaks through some tremendous downpours. I am sporting new front Ortliebs and did add the pockets to them. We put all of our tools and repair parts in them.

Mine got a little damp in a rain, so I just put some silicone around the holes to seal it. Find and dandy now.

I agree! I ordered one just yesterday, and it didn't occur to me until afterward to see what others thought. It was a nice surprise to come across a current thread such as this.

Just got a set...
Curious to see where everyone mounts them (ie. front or rear pannier and towards the front or rear of the bike).

I attached the external water bottle cages that use the same attachment rig as the pockets. No problems with water leaking so far, although I have yet to ride through a rainstorm with them; my test was to hold them under the shower, and they didn't leak.

@Stanmah - I had mine mounted on the front of the front panniers, but they started popping out on my first full day touring with them (yesterday). I flipped them, and even though toe clearance is only an inch or so, they haven't come off in the 25 miles so far today, althohgh the roads are smoother than yesterday. (Possibly relevant is that my front rack tilts the panniers a little, so the front of the pannier is a touch lower than the back, and gravity may be helping. I also wedged some velcro in between the removable and non-removable parts, so the part that needs to flex to be removed can't flex enough to pop out.)

I put two of these on a single Rear Roller and I'm in love. They are a must for anyone touring without a handlebar bag, but even with one, it's nice to have a place to put smaller things that you access very often. I use one for snack items and the other for maps, journals, pen, camera and wind jacket. Highly recommended!
