I had been using a Park Tools Rescue Tool MTB-3 (had two of these - wore out the first one) but my current favourite is a Serfas ST-LV Multi Mini Tool. Never heard of Serfas before but it's a great (not so) little tool for a longer tour (and apparently no longer available anywhere).

I have several. On tour I have a Lezyne. In addition to the normal Allen wrenches and screwdrivers, it has a large Allen Wrench that fits my crank bolts, and a chain tool. I had a crank bolt fall out on my mountain bike when I was miles away from my truck. I didn't have a tool to fit. I had to finger-tight the bolt and limp back. I think it's highly unlikely it will ever happen again, but I'm prepared. I've never needed my chain tool on the road, but a friend did. Since it comes on the multi-tool, I figure, why not?
I don't carry a Leatherman. They look too heavy. I carry my Swiss Army Knife. The pliers on the Leatherman look really useful, but I don't want to carry the whole tool just for pliers. Hmmmm. The quest to find the perfect kit will never end! |
On tours where tool weight is not a significant factor I like to carry dedicated tools in addition to the simplest of multi-tools like the first pic the OP posted.

I'm happy with my Crank Bros 17:
http://media.rei.com/media/t/1479262.jpg and my leatherman wave I take with me everywhere I go: http://www.urbandude.co.za/wp-conten...man-Wave-2.jpg I love everything about it, including the pliers. It comes in handy in almost every way my crank bros tool cannot. |
I like my Topeak Hexus, though I like the looks of the Alien II as well. I plan on taking my Hexus and my Leatherman with me this summer when I do my first overnights.

The Park MTB-3 has everything a bicycle needs.
|
Don't use 'em. Like carrying a variety pack of extra tire tubes - 700c, 26", 27", whether they fit my bike or not. I just carry tools that fit something on my bike, and in some rare cases they have 17" handles. I can go out solo for 2 weeks with stuff that fits in the palm of my hand, just so long as I don't need to fix cranks, or remove pedals.
|
I don't like multi tools except for the tire levers. Whenever something needs attention on my bike its like the only part that a multi tool won't reach or work for. I carry a star type allen wrench with the 3 most common bike sizes and then a regular set of allen wrenches in metric of course and a couple of screwdrivers one slotted and one phillips and a pair of small needlenose pliers and and some smaller size metric open and box combo wrenches. Sounds like a lot but they don't really take up a lot of room since they all seem to fall to the bottom of my panniers anyway.

If I can't fix it with one of these, then I just go drink beer.

not 17 tools with the Leathermen Wave but pliers |
A crank brothers 17 and a pocket power plier by SOG. Made outside of Seattle, and superior to Leatherman tools.

Get a Park Tool Mtb-3. IT. HAS. EVERYTHING! Do any of the multi tools above have a pedal wrench? No.
