Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

PAPER MAPS and check the dates...been there done that

If I am going into a new area I start with Google, and then check it against the USCG topo maps. Delorme Gazetteer maps are excellent too. Delorme makes a GPS unit that you can download their maps into but I haven't spent the money for one of those yet.

Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

I'm currently riding from Boston to New York. I just left Rhode Island, and in terms of accuracy, Google Maps keeps trying to send me on streets that don't exist. Accuracy is much better in New Jersey.

an update: we planned our trip this time using google maps and street view, and it worked much much better. we did ask other people for their experience too, though, which helped a ton. Additionally, a GPS helped us find our way around in the dark.

It's odd; for this one area south west of Austin, Google maps seemed to work fine. For the hill country directly west of Austin, it sent us down private gated roads. Anyhow, I'll report those issues and just see what happens. Lesson learned; don't put all your eggs in Google's basket.
