Where are you touring in 2012?

Several people have indicated that they're planning to set off on tours in the near future ... I think there are quite a few of us who are planning to go this month.

So tell us where you're going this year. Will it be a long tour, short tour, or something in between? Will it be to a place you've been before, or somewhere new? Solo or with others?

I start my 2012 tour this Monday, June 4th, from Northern New Jersey to St. John's Newfoundland. I'll be out for 60 days till August 3rd. I'll be posting to my blog and following this route. Looks like it might start a little on the soggy side, but the weather is the weather.

July 3, Chengdu, China, my current place of abode, to Turkey, probably my next place of abode.

Might have to catch a train for the first 1000 km because of visa issues, I have a visa until the 30 th of August, and the Chinese - Kyrgyzstan border is a long way away through the hot desert.

After our short 25th anniversary ride to Paris end of April beginning of May we are going on a three week discover Holland tour in a couple of days.
We decided to stay closer to home because we know more about France, Spain, Italy, Greece and a few other countries than we know about The Netherlands, and we live here
The only problem is the weather, after about a month of dry sunny weather, it looks like rain for at least the first week.
It seems every time we plan on getting on our bikes the weather turns

August/September 6 weeks through Greece, Italy, Croatia, Spain and Portugal. A "luxury" tour I guess, staying in Apartments and day riding the most scenic routes available, including a pilgrimage to the Ghisallo chapel near lake como, and a visit to my grandmothers original home on the island of Korcula. Cant wait!!

I rode from San Diego to Sarasota early in the year and am doing a 3 week tour in the Colorado Rockies in August. I plan to do some peak bagging and hiking while on this tour.

I've done three short tours (4-5 days) along the St-Lawrence or Ottawa river, and going on another one today. Then later this summer, I have 4 weeks between Calgary and Vancouver, including 5 days on the Berg Lake hiking trail.

Man, those are some sweet tours... China to Turkey sounds amazing - I can't wait to follow that one on crazy guy! I'm going to Prince Edward Island this weekend for a quick tip-to-tip, and then throughout July and August I'll be leading lots of 5 and 6 day tours through the Maritimes - Cabot Trail, The Fundy Isles in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island - some cool little ones, but nothing around the world!

My touring time has been cut back due to family health issues. But, in a week, I plan a 3 day ride down the California Coast from Mendocino to Petaluma. No matter how often I ride along the California Coast, it is always beautiful.

Heading out on Wednesday the 6th to ride from my office, ( a good place to leave my truck) up the NCR trail to Merry Meadows campground. The next day from Merry Meadows to the end of the trail in York and back to the campground. Then back home the next day. This is a setup run for my 5 day ride across the Md. Eastern shore from the bay to the ocean and back. I finished stage packing last night and I still have plenty of room left in the panniers. Did I forget something? I purposly bought smaller panniers so I wasn't tempted to carry so much stuff.

2nd half of TransAm starting Sept 1. Oregon coast to Pueblo, CO last year; Pueblo to Hilton Head, SC this year. All motels, no camping, slow pace - we averaged 43 miles daily on the first half. Deviating off the TransAm to avoid Ozarks & Appalachians: taking the Katy to MRT, then across AL & GA on Chief Ladiga / Silver Comet. Fellow slow pokes welcome to join us

Mix of organized ride and touring...........Riding 2 days to the start of RAGBRAI then doing 6 days of Ragbrai then north to a friends for a visit, then back across Iowa to my sisters house. Going to take in the High Trestle Trail on the way back.

Leaving June 18th on the Trans American Bicycle Route, from Yorktown, VA to Astoria, OR. This will be my first long bicycle tour (2 months). Been training and planing this trip for a little over a year now. Excited to finally get it started! I'm soo tired of spending all my money on bike gear and camping equipment! Ready to ride! I've ridden roughly 12,000 miles in a little over a year ( I don't own a car just my 520), and I'm very ready for this awesome adventure. Hope to see some of you out on the road!

We're planning to cycle to the Camargue from Amsterdam this year, abt. 1650 km. Man I love France. It will be our third 1000+ km tour.

I'm on my way home from doing the Natchez Trace in both directions from my home in Louisville ky about 200 more miles to go.

OK, Rifleman. Next year's trip starts in Nashville, down the Trace to Southern Tier to Atlantic Coast to Key West. So . . . tell me the Trace is downhill that direction? If you've got a journal, I'd love to see it!

No journal but u picked the right direction to do the Natchez.The Tn. section is really hilly but u will have a lot of really long down hills by going south.Colbert ferry campground is on the right side of the road on the other side of the Tennissee river in Alabama and it's free .Mississippi is really flat.Jeff Busby and Rocky Springs are really nice campgrounds.They have water and restrooms but no showers and its free to get in and camp.Witch dance is pretty nice too just south of Tupelo but it's just a picnic area but u can bicycle camp there in the back.

If your using Adventure cycling maps for the Trace.Don't go to the Laurel hill wildlife mgmt area campground.It's 2 miles off the Trace and they won't let u camp there unless your fishing.For the Trace use the Nps map it's better it shows where all the rest stops and water stops are.

I'm going to bike to Wisconsin Sheep and Wool again this year, since we're NOT MOVING. Last year the festival and our move were basically scheduled on top of each other, and it just wasn't realistic to go. This year, I want to take classes so hopefully I can do a couple nights out. If I manage classes, I'll probably bike out Thursday and come home Monday.

I may manage to drag my partner out on an overnight or weekend at one or another of the local state parks. Devil's Lake and Blue Mounds are both close and not particularly demanding bike rides if he wants to burn the miles.

Something around a 32mm or 1-1/8 for width will work nicely. My hybrid has 38's my touring bikes have 32's and 1-1/4", both work really well. The Katy is crushed limestone, fairly smooth, so anything knobby is not needed, but something with a little tread and flat protection works great. By "a little tread" I mean something similar to Vittoria Adventure Touring or Pasela Tourguard, both are pretty good rollers on that surface. Hope this info helps.

We're taking our tandem to the Czech Republic for 3 weeks starting in late August. We'll do Praha-Tabor-Cesky Krumlov-Sumava-Eschlkam-Plzen-Praha, only about 370 miles. That will leave us with a lot of time for socializing, practicing my Czech, and wandering around. IME traveling is all about the people.

Our original plan was to be really independent, bring full camping gear and camp wild as much as possible, just like we do when we do long hikes in the wilderness. However, when I got down in the weeds with route planning, I realized that country restaurants are inexpensive, and that the more we isolate ourselves cooking at our campsite, hiding in the woods, etc., the more we defeat the purpose of our tour. So we're leaving the stove at home. We'll buy cookless food: bread, cheese, jam, butter, fruit, bars, that kind of thing, but we'll eat most meals with the locals, sleep in campgrounds where they exist, in pensions where they don't, and drink beer at least twice a day. We'll probably gain weight.

We bought our tickets yesterday. Flying with our uncoupled tandem, the Racing Limo, will be no problem. We're excited.

For me, I am making the most of my long service leave and heading off to ride what I am calling the Dreaming Tour which is a ride as much as possible off highways from Darwin to Perth in Australia. Highlights of the ride include Litchfield National Park, Gibb River Road, Karijini National Park and Mt Augustus and warm days and cold nights. About 5,000 km and approximately 2.5 months of riding. I will keep a journal at Crazy Guy on a Bike.
