Advice for shipping/flying with bike

Hey, I'm doing a cross-country trip this summer and I need some advice for the best way to get my bike out there. Should I break it down, put it in a box from my local bike shop, then bring it on the airline with a fragile sticker or should I ship it over then pick it up when I get there?

Also, if anyone is interested, my friend and I are still looking for people to join us on the trip, from San Fran to Virginia spanning from June to August of this summer.

There are tons of threads on this. Do a search.

The cheapest and easiest way will probably be to pre ship it FedEx.
